Rear brakes / SIZE?

Well it has come time to do my rear brakes and the auto parts store wants to know if they are 9 or 10 inch in size, wouldn't my truck have the larger size because it has 4 wheel ABS and the truck was factory ordered with all the bells and whistles including tow package. Or should I not be assuming I have the larger brakes, meaning the 10's over the 9's.

Edit: can I call the dealer and give them my vin and they will be able to tell me on what size? or was the auto parts guy full of BS about the vin and dealer.

You can pull the drums off and measure them

pwrranger88 01-13-2010 05:36 PM

i'm pretty sure the 9 inch drums have fins and the 10 inch drums are smooth

Why dont you just take a tape measure out there and get a rough measurement. Thats how ive always done mine and never had a problem. dont even have to pull the wheel off either.

what diff you got?

Maximum diameter for turning the drums should be stamped right on the drum, assuming they're OEM.

If you have the 7.5, you have the 9" drums. If you have the 8.8, you have 10" drums.

Being a 4.0 with 4x4 I'm betting you have the 8.8, but that's not a guarantee.

I have 10" drums but my axle code is 87, which is open 7.5:confused:

Interesting. I've only seen the 7.5's with the smaller drums. Being Ford though, not making sense, makes sense.

False...
if you have a supercab, you have 10" brakes regardless of 7.5 or 8.8...
if you have a reg cab you have 9" drums regardless of 7.5 or 8.8

WITH EXCEPTION to edges, which all came with 8.8s
most all 01-03s came with 8.8s i dont think a 7.5 was available then
now they use the 7.5 again starting back in 04~05

I did my brakes the other day and they were the 10 inch brakes!!
