Icon2 Remote/ security system question

Alright I want to get a Remote start security system, and I was wondering if anybody has installed a remote/security system on their own? How hard is this to do? I called a couple local stores who install remote starters and they said they will only install the ones they sell and I don't want to buy one from them b/c I found a good deal on ebay for a remote/security system.

This is what I found:

Its a performance Technique system.

Thanks,
Clay

Well, I also installed universal power locks. It was a kit off ebay for $119. It was not all that hard. I used that inside metal kick panel to mount everything.

I think so because it would be the easiest way to access light the starter but I guess you would not have to. Maybe tap the wire that goes through up to the steering column. I really do not know. I never put the starter part on because I did not want to with the clutch.

Don't forget that if your key has a chip in it, some kits require you to buy another peice that a key has to be attached for the remote start to work. I had to sacrifice my spare chipped key for remote start. Luckly when I bought my truck in 03, it came with 3 keys. Only 2 have chips in them. My system is an AudioVox and I had it professionally done just because I got a hook up and I didn't want to fart with the wiring.

running the wires thru the firewall is pretty easy. under the relay box in the engine is a really good place, also a good place for the siren. have you ever done anything like this before? if not it could be pretty tricky if you are not comfortable with wiring like this and such. plus you gotta be careful of the airbag wires while you are poking around under the dash. get a wiring diagram (i have a few helpful tech bulletins and a diagram for an 04). you will have to diode isolate the door wires as well. and double check everything with a meter as well.

i am a professional installer. and they are easy for me. but before i get into that rant. i must say DO NOT BUY THAT UNIT!!!! it is junk abosulte junk. if it is not a dei (viper, python, avital, clifford, hornet, valet) or compustar it is not worth a damn. spend the money take it to the shop have them do it all have a warrenty. or buy a dei unit drive up to lansing and i will install it for you for $80. but if you want to do it are you good with electrical, understand how to use a digital multimeter, know how to test wires, understand what trigger a wire needs to see to work, how to solder if you dont know how to braid a wire onto a factory wire securely.

I have no experiance with wiring like this. I decided not to get that system. Turns out I made the right choice from what u said. ya i'll probably look for one of the brands you mentioned. $80 thats a great deal but I'm not going to be able to go to lansing. Installation for this is expensive around here

keep in mind that installation on my truck took a little over 8 hours by a professional shop. I have the Python with remote start. If it is going to take that long for a professional, then it will take 2 or 3 times as long for an amateur.

also, when I had mine put in the installation wasn't too expensive:
equipment - ~$600
installation - ~$150
install time - >8 hours

Definitely go w/ a reputable company. The cheap stuff is a nightmare, and it will never work properly. Or if it does, it won't for long. A1 Electric (.com) sells the good stuff. I installed their power lock/keyless entry system on my truck and it has worked flawlessly. I installed an off brand keyless entry/power locks/security system on a Cavalier I had, and it never, ever worked right.

I want a 2 way alarm that does nothing but make the remote make noise and light up when the alarm is tripped. I don't want any lights to flash or any siren or horn to make noise at the truck. Pretty much I want it to look like no alarm even went off to begin with for whoever is trying to do something for my truck. Would something like this be a lot easier to do myself since a lot less stuff would probably have to be hooked up?

Does the factory remote start require a key like the after market ones do?

Why is it stupid? There are a lot of thunderstorms down here, I don't want an annoying alarm going off all the time in the morning and at night. Plus I don't want the alarm to go off and have the person run away to continue doing other cars without getting caught. My neighborhood had a lot of break in's by kids walking into the neighborhood at night, other people had alarms and the only thing that would happen is the alarm would go off and wake everyone up after the kids already ran away.

What I want to know is that since I wouldn't have to hook that stuff up would it be something I could do myself?

I bought two identical remote starts from walmart just over two years ago, one for my truck and one for my wifes car, they cost $39.95 each and then looked up a MOBILE electronics person who installs stereo equipment for vehicles at your house,he charged me $75.00 each and was done in less then two hours.

My remote starts have worked flawlessly for over two years now and my wife and I use them faithfully summer and winter.

I did make one small modification to the foot long antenna hidden under the dash,I spliced into the antenna and ran a wire all the way up my door frame pillar right up to my sun visor all while hiding it under the plastic trim and just left a 1 inch piece exposed for reception by the visor, my reception is amazing now!!!!

I am not sure if walmart still carries them but here is a link
http://www.bulldogsecurity.com/bd_test/Starters.html

My factory keyless entry/ALARM still works fine and in conjunction with my remote start.

It appears the systems on A1 Electric's website use a bypass module that doesn't defeat the oem security system, so from what I gathered, it doesn't require a key, but don't hold me to that. It says their systems (Valet) are compatible w/ most systems, including Ford's PATS & Securelock/rolling code Securelock.

I studied electronics in school, I do alot of electronics work, and find myself to be quite capable when it comes to digital electronics. I have looked into it and for the hassle, possible problems, troubleshooting time, I think its well worth it to have someone install it for you who gives a warrenty.

I looked at whats required, and its in my grasp to do it, but if there is a problem, after a week of possible troubleshooting, I know I will be saying I should have footed the bill in the beginning.

I am actually getting my g/f car done today, and mine goes in Monday for this. The guy is offering lifetime on the hardware, and no labour charge if I ever have to go back for a repair, for the time I own the vehicle. Well worth the $200 each vehicle (modual + install).

I thought 8 hours was normal, but maybe not. I had two different shops install similar alarm/remote start systems (Viper and Python) in two different trucks and both times I dropped it off at 8am and it was finished around 5pm. So, with an hour for lunch it took them about 8 hours. Maybe they didn't start working on it until late. That kind of pisses me off since I dropped the truck so damn early, WTF?!

I have installed a few remote starters, never any alarms but doesn't mean it can't be done. If you feel up to it, I will give ya a hand installing it, I'm not that far from you.....
