if you just wanted to pull the headunit itself out, and leave the spacer/panel there, then yes, there was an easier way to do so, and no screws were needed to be removed!
there's a metal sleeve that stays attatched to the black paneling your radio sits in. on either side of the radio, there are clips that hold the headunit in that sleeve. to remove the headunit only from your dash, first remove that little trim ring around your face plate.. then, take the 2 small, thin flat metal things that should have come with the headunit (they're called keys), slide them into the side of the headunit, and carefully pull the head unit out.. those keys, when in correctly, depress the clips, which then releases the headunit from the black panel.
but yeah.. dont worry about it tho.. my black panel/spacer is constantly in and out because im constantly back there for different things.. over time it has weakened somewhat, and will need to be replaced in the future!!
