Had mine professionally done. They just went over the vinyl. Pick a dark colour to hide any stains you might get. I still use floor mats. It cabin nice and quiet now.

When I replace the vinyl flooring in my 2003 XL I'll be using this company:

Auto Carpet for Car, Truck, Van - Stock Interiors

They sent me some small samples of carpet.

I will pull out the vinyl, lay down some dynomat or similar and then install new carpet.

Rammat is less expensive than dynamat and is lighter. A bunch of small sections of Rammat then a layer of closed cell foam, them a layer of MLV (mass loaded vinyl), then carpet is the way I am going with my build. Great heat and noise barrier.

Thanks for the info Tugg. The carpet I order will have mass backing already applied to it. I'll have to look into that Rammat and closed cell foam.

Mlv works best when not in direct contact with what you are trying to block noise from. That is the reason for the CCF layer between them. A bunch of info on that can be found at www.sounddeadenershowdown.com . The stuff I have now came from Rammat, but my next order is coming from sds.
