Allright, Ive been betching and babbling about it for 3 months now. It has been in my garage for 3 weeks now, this weekend it will be in my truck...

Im finally swapping my bad tranny. 3 months ago (1 day short of owning this truck for a month) I lost 4th gear. I finally saved up the $ to get a rebuilt, and finally got a weekend off so I could give plenty of time to work on it. Friday around 4:00 pm my truck is going to squeeze into my tiny garage and I will begin working on it finally. If anyone is in the Milwaukee area and wants to check in PM me. There will be plenty of beer, cigarettes and music. I dont know if I will be able to get my garage shut with the truck in, so friday might be an allnighter, until the back alley neighbors are awake and can keep their eyes open for me.

Ive been Kroiling the exhaust bolts for 2 weeks now, they are the only thing I am afraid of. As much as Id like a catback, I cant afford that right now either so the exhaust has to come off easily. Supposedly my clutch was done 30,000 miles ago so Im not replacing it and I would think that things should come apart a little easier because of that.

Yes I have been priming my drinking skills tonight, or Id be in bed already. Im probably going to drive my coworkers nuts tomorrow also, with my babble. This will be my biggest repair yet, on my favorite 4 wheeled vehicle yet.

Ok I hope someone reads this...

In the Haynes manual it mentions a special tool to disconnect the hydraulic clutch quick disconnect. It also mentions getting by without using a screwdriver. I was trying with a 1/4" flat blade screwdriver tonight and couldnt get it. Can anyone give me a tip on how to do it with the screwdriver, or maybe a pic of the special tool.

Anyways, tonight progress consisted of getting the driveshafts off, getting the exhaust loose (went better than the driveshafts actually). Im almost ready to remove the T-Case and that looks like its going to be a pain. Roughly how much does the T-case weigh? I was amazed at how light the tranny itself was.

Someone remind WHY I decided to DIY this one.

Im on hour number 8 and I still dont have the demn tranny out yet. If I ever get a chance to meet Mr. Haynes (of the Haynes manual) Im going to shoot him

 

use to flat screwdrivers. work the oring into the housing, then put one on the split in the orin to hold it ther. push the line into the housing, push the ring the rest of the way in with the screwdriver, and wiggle the line. it should come out that way.

 

Thanks, I went to Checker this morning looking for the tool and didnt find one. I dislike NAPA so I got it done with a screwdriver this morning.

Now my problem is getting to the top bolts of the tranny. Im getting frustrated and ready to call a towtruck. If Im not done monday I will call the tranny shop around the corner and see how much to just put the new one in and I will button the rest back up here.

My problems...The bolts holding the transfer case hit the rear tranny mount, making it impossible to slip the bolt out (if it was 1/4" I could get it, I might cut that bolt and replace it) Exhaust is loose from the exhaust mainfolds to the break behind the 2nd cat. I cant wiggle it out of the way with the crossmember there. Ive got the tranny and t-case supported with a jack now, as one piece. Im going to get the crossmember out of the way so I can drop the exhaust, then I should have room to reach the top tranny bolt

I hope someone can tell me that manual trannys are beyond understanding. I got the old one out and popped off the top. I didnt see any sheared off gears like I was expecting. The problem started with me "making" a yellow while in 4th gear one day. I hit the gas in 4th and heard tons of grinding. After I got through the light I recreated what had just happened and the next time I went for 4th I had nothing, it was just like being in nuetral. When I got home that night I changed the tranny fluid and found lots of shavings. I expected that somehow I sheared all the 4th gear teeth off.

FWIW though, I came up with a great tip for lifting a tranny up if you dont have enough clearance to slide it under that truck with it on a jack. Ipositioned the tranny beneath the truck, then I put a ratchet strap around the tranny and over a pipe that I laid over the shifter hole. I ratcheted the front of the tranny into place and then reset my strap so I could get the back high enough to get the floorjack under it.

 

The Haynes manual says to remove the transfer case first. I wasnt thinking when I was griping about the bolt from the t-case hitting the mount, that I could just jack the tranny up and remove the mount. Once that mount was out of the way things got much easier. At 11:00 last night the old one was out and now I have the new tranny in, and the exhaust back on. Next up is the crossmember, then the t-case, starter, and driveshafts.

I also decided that putting the tranny fluid in through the floor should work if I can get someone to let me know when it starts overflowing the fill hole. When I changed the fluid last it was a b!tch getting fluid in through the real fill hole, and I probably didnt have enough there.

 

Wish i would have seen this earlier cuz i think i have the tool for the slave disconect sitting in my trunk with my new clutch.

I didnt get it finished yet, I didnt get to work on it today and now I have my mothers car for the week, to carsit while she is in Vegas. I will be working on it tomorrow night and should have it done then. I only have to put the t-case and the driveshafts back on now, I miss my truck

 

I'm around 116th and greenfield and at least your getting it done quick mines been broke for over a year now and im finally now about to get it back together and running again.

Its in, but I cant get it into gear at all, and when I start the truck and hold it in first it will move foward, but when I try putting it in reverse it will move FOWARD also.
