There is a loud noise coming from the front left of my truck, it has been getting quite a bit louder the last few days. Also there is some vibration in the front end that is really annoying. I am thinking it's a bearing, but I'm not sure. Any thoughts?

jack the truck up and see if you can rock the wheel back and forth a good bit..if so..then yes a wheel bearing..

i had mine go out..its a nasty grinding popping sound

 

Do the same as evan said. Wheel bearings on our trucks are under $20 a side, and IMO are easy to replace. It's cheap insurrance compared to the damage it would do if one were to go out!

I would jack it up, check it out. It also could just be loose, which would mean you have to tighten the spindle nut.

 

I am not gonna do anything tonight. It's 35* out and I don't feel like working on the truck being that cold. I will probably do it tomorrow on my lunch break. Thanks.

where in the heck are you getting your parts from..ipaid like 325 for one side..but i have a warranty so im straight for as long as i own the truck..

and yes its easy..3 bolts takes it off..pop off caliper and rotor!

 

i have to do them and i picked em up 4 $130 each but id say wheel bearing

 

Evan you have to remember his truck is a 2wd, they use normal tapered bearings.

 

The 4x4 hub bearing was 264 from Bennet

 

On 2WD trucks it is $20. 4WD is $120 on up.

It does sound like a wheel bearing issue. Get it taken care of ASAP before the wheel decides to take a hike. I have seen it happen before on an F-150. The owner got lucky and noticed it before the wheel came off and ripped off the fender with it. We replaced the wheel bearings in the rain, with crappy tools, and no shelter in a couple of hours (we did brakes too while we had everything apart, and there were a couple of mixups at Auto Zone).

 

Checked it out yesterday. Bearings were fine, we repacked the left one. I'm kinda thinking it might be the tires roaring loud as crap, but that'll get fixed soon enough.

 

Check the shocks mine cam a lil loose and made all kinds of racket , also while your there go over all the suspension and see if anything is out of place .

 

Check the swaybar links....they have a habit of sometime breaking and not falling out. Can make a noise in the front end. Cheap fix...parts at Advance....$14 per side.

 

didnt you just crank your torsion bars? How old are your balljoints and have they been replaced lately? If not the extra stress from cranking the balljoints may of finally put enough stress on them to go bad?

 

I have a noise in the front of my truck as well. No vibrating or anything and I only hear it over around 30mph and then don't really hear it after 45mph.. It's like a "wah wah wah wah" and picks up speed with the tire (faster wah wah etc)..

I took it to a mechanic yesterday and he drove it. He said it doesn't sound like the bearings.. He got out and looked at the tires and said they didn't look curved.. He recommended I rotate the tires and see if the sound was still there so I had the tires rotated yesterday and I still have the sound.

Another friend who is a mechanic out of state says that still doesn't point to bearings, necessarily, but from what I'm describing he still thinks it's the tires.

What does everyone else think?

my truck makes that noise as well.. it has made that noise since day one

 

Ha!!! That's EXACTLY what I said too! I told my mechanic I can remember it since day one and I'm the original owner..

That actually makes me feel better.

However, I'm in the process of selling it and 2 people have mentioned the sound and I think that is a reason they didn't buy it. I told them it always made that sound and that it was just the tires..

 

Hmmm, maybe your brakes with a warped rotor? You only hear the sound maybe when the pads rub on a certain spot? Hence the increase in freq when you increase in speed?

 

I got my pads replaced maybe 8 months ago and I did the rotors about 12 months ago as well.

It definitely sounds like the tires on the road.. But I just wanted to see if anyone had any ideas..

Brakes work fine with no noises themselves..

When i first bought mine, i thought it was the tires as well (if it were because of the brakes, you would feel it everytime you stopped or apply the brakes).


it almost sounds like a flat spot on the tires.. but ive had 837982 sets of tires on this thing and it never made a difference. I believe its something in the front diff.

 

Something like what? It's weird we've both had this same thing (mine for over 4 years) and I've never had any problems with it.
