Side to side play, front wheels?

I have a 96 2 wheel drive. Had wheel bearings replaced 50k miles ago. When I grab the front wheel at the top w/ my hands amd push and pull while the car is on the ground, there's a slight bit of play. Is this normal? Can I just tighten up the large nut under the grease cap or is a little bit of play normal? I really don't know much about front ends at all.

Thanks.

your not going to get a good idea how much play is really there unless the truck is up in the air. Your just rocking the tire back and forth is all.

It could be the bearings or the ball joints.

has to be jacked up to really tell. and yes that nut should be snug, but no where near cranking tight or finger tight.

like cole said if wheel bearing are newish and greased then its unlikely its the bearing. ball joints are getting old more than likely

Thanks guys. I'll jack it up and see if I can find any more movement. If the nut needs tightening, I'm assuming I should just snug it up until most of the play goes away? Thanks.

Yes and no.
when you snug that bearing up, spin your wheel. You want to have SOME drag, but not a whole lot.
