Smoking on cold startup

I have noticed a one second puff of white'ish smoke on cold startup over the last two days. The smoke dissapears after a second and the truck runs as normal...with no power issues. There is no smoke visable on warm startups. The oil level is normal as it was recently changed.

12k miles on an 05 Edge

My question is has there been any recalls due to this? Has anyone brought their truck back and had the problem corrected?

Sounds like a blown head gasket or cracked head. You have a coolant leak somewhere.

034x4 07-19-2006 05:50 AM

I doubt you have a blown headgasket or cracked head at 12k. But it does sound like a slow coolant leak into the engine.

tchs_drummer06 07-19-2006 07:51 PM

Then what else would cause it?

Mike9825 07-19-2006 08:02 PM

I'm with the others but i dunno about a cracked block at that young mileage. It is possible but i doubt it.

Blown head gasket, possibly. Could be faulty from the factory. Not saying that's what it is but a possibilty.

Only other thing i can think of is Ford and the other Big 3 use plastic for the intake manifold. Stupid move if you ask me. Maybe your getting some moisture in the engine then as soon as that combustion chamber gets hot, it burns off the moisture. The whitish smoke from your descriptions sounds nothing major for now anyway until you get it looked at. -Mike-

Did you run it though any high water in its first 12k miles?
high water = 12" or more .. or 4" or more at high speed.

Justin R 07-19-2006 10:06 PM

Nope, no standing water. the motor is stock down to the air filter.

the smoke has a blue'ish tint to it.

I just got the oil changed today so ...dunno if it will make a difference or not.

I'm going to start taking pics of the smoke to show to the service writer

where did ya get the oil changed? have you done proper break in?

034x4 07-20-2006 05:38 AM

New engines don't have a proper break in procedure.

If it's a blueish tint thats not coolant thats oil...

Rand 07-20-2006 08:26 PM

White = water/coolant Black = rich (too much gas)
blue = oil

If you can see the blueness you should be burning more than 1qt/500 miles.
Or so I was told.

mx98ranger 07-20-2006 08:41 PM

i dont know.. if its white.. its probably just moisture on the cylinder walls... ive seen it before... not a big deal

01xltranger4x4 07-21-2006 08:36 PM

Take it to the dealer, see what they say....It should be under warranty if there is a problem, you only have 12k.

Justin R 07-22-2006 01:34 PM

This began happening last week just as it came up on 12k miles...time for oil change.

I had the oil changed and switched to the recommended weight ..only I put in synthetic. The smoking continues but there is less of it.

The oil level was full before the change.
