ok, i ordered a bama tuner from underdog, i know tuners and chips have the option to run higher octane fuel, alot that i've found require 91-93 octane and not 87. what advantages does the higher octane have over the 87? from what i've read here and on the net the higher the octane the slower the burn and engines have a different compression ratio and such. but why the need? better performance?more efficient? i'm still fairly new to this octane deal.

 

the higher octane, the more you can advance your spark for a hotter burn.....

I have the bama tuner (x-cal2)

I've been datalogging stock, 87 oct tune, and some 93 tunes as well.

I've not completed this yet.. but the 93 tunes timing is not all that much more *at WOT*. However there is a significant increase in power in both part throttle and WOT.

I've also run a tank of cheap 87 octane on the 93 tune. I took it easy at first and supprisingly I did'nt see any knock sensor actvity at WOT. (timing was maxing at 19-20 btdc)

IMO 1/2 the reason for getting the tuner is automatic tranny control. Not just power and milage increases.

btw, one of my tunes is a 93 TQ. And having spent a little time towing my 19ft boat.. I like this tune a lot. It has good power down low, keeps the convertor locked up more, and raises the light throttle shift points. If you tow? It's one of the little areas of the SCT/Bama tunes that's worth the money IMO.

the octane thing confuses me too....
though I know if I run 93 in my truck it gets worse mileage for some reason, and if i run anything lower than 93 octane in my car, it doesn't run right.....

 

I've repeatedly seen higher milage using shell 93 and sunoco 93 vs 87. This is true in my caddy too.

It's my *opinion* that 1/2 the reason is because of carbon build up. If I run 93 for a while then switch over to 87 I'll get the same milage for a few tanks then it'll slowly degrade. I switch back and the milage instantly jumps up.

This is not true on the caddy though. The caddy will see an instant 2mpg change within 1-2 tank fills.

As far as the ranger.. I'm now getting 21-22mpg in 50/50 driving. (fx4, 4.10s, x-cal, underdrive, e-fan, K&N kit, magnaflow aftercat, and the tires are slightly overinflated) This IMO is pretty good because I started off in the 16-17 range. And I now only have to fill it once a week because I drive about 350-370miles. Got a lot more punch to it too.

then you need to spend some money on upgrades.....

what size engine do you have...

all of the above is in no particular order.......
listed parts you are looking at spending ~$2,000......

I too have had difficulty dealing with bama direct. It's a fine product.. but I'd suggest going through jusnes to get it. He seems to have the golden key for talking to bama.

His response was I don't need anything, he didn't sell me a tune I didn't need when he could have. This was all done in a day with emails. Worst time response he has given me was next day. I would recommend him anytime.
