SOHC to OHV swap

What will I need to swap my whole ohv 4.0L with a ohc 4.0L. It comes with a harness, computer and every accessory so that's not a problem. I'm wondering about the frame and motor mounts, throttle cable and main harness that plugs into the engine wiring harness. It cam out of a manual and I have a manual also so I think the new computer should be fine right?

I think you'd be better off with the motor mounts and such because of the 4.0 OHV engine. The guy I know that swapped a 4.0 SOHC into his 97 4cyl ended up getting another frame from a V6 ranger with 4wd so he could also set up the suspension properly. He never liked the way his motor sat with the 4cyl motor mount locations. I think you ought to be alright.

Yeah I might just order new ones for an OHC then.

I wonder if my motor has the same type and number of o2 sensors? Does anyone here know anyone who did this swap before?

Also what is the power difference?

This kind of swap sounds simple at first glance but it may have some pitfalls. It varies by year but you can expect to see some incompatibilities. Examples of problems that you might see:

Fuel system type and pressure,
emissions components,
speed sensor,
A/C activation,
PATS,
etc., etc.

Are you speaking from experience or just guessing?

The fuel pump should be the same and the regulator comes with the engine.

the only emision problems that could posible give me a problem may be the evap system or the 02's.

A/C activation should be the same.

I really hope the PATS system doesnt give me a problem, where is the sensor for that and does it have a seperate module in or does that run off the ECM?

A little of both...

Possible returnless vs return systems, different pumps, 40 vs 65 PSI. All Ranger SOHC and some OHV's are regulated inside the tank, not on the engine.

The evap system and monitoring method are very different for 96 and 2001+.

Not necessarily. Some years have reversed logic for the relay that controls the compressor clutch.

The PATS transeiver is at the steering column. The SOHC PCM (except 2005) will be looking for PATS but there is no PATS system on your 96.

Also: the speed sensor method and wiring is a completely different system for 95~97, 98~2000, 2001-on.

It would be good to have a Wiring Manual/EVTM for the year of the donor engine and one for your truck.

Bump..

I just found out the fuel pump is the same part number from 96 and 2003 and both are returnless so is there a way to just change the regulator? I cant even find a regulator part number for an 03.

You could use a potentiometer and variate the control voltage/current to the pump itself ( Thats all a ' boost-a-pump is ).

I had one when I ran a dual staged setup a while back.
