Got in a hit and run accident tonight **PICS added**

Well, just got home from a long night. I was at school late, meeting with a group for a project, and had just left campus at 10 PM. I was waiting to turn right at a red light, and there was a car in front of me.

So I am sitting there, and I hear skidding and screaching behind me, and look in my mirror just in time to see a car barrelling down at me. I had enough time to brace for the impact and drop a few F bombs. Then the guy smashes into me pretty freakin hard, keep in mind I had been dead stopped for 30 secs or so, so there was no reason to be driving so fast into the back of me.

So in the ensuing seconds of panic/surprise, I am about to get out of my truck to go talk to the guy, and as I turn my head I see him driving past me through the red light and trying to get away. Well, hell if I'm gonna let somebody hit and run me, so I turn my truck on and run the latest red light of my life and chase after the guy. I get on the phone with the police and tell them what is going on, well the dispatcher tells me to stop following the guy since it is not safe. SO reluctantly and mad as hell, I give in, and I stop following him.

I talk to the dispatcher for a minute or two, tell her the details, and give her the license and description of the car. She says they are too busy to send an officer out, and some officer will call me in the next couple of days. So I go home pissed and thinking nothing will ever come of this and I am just screwed.

After being home 30-40 mins, I get a call from the police, and the officer tells me to come back to the scene of the accident, and he has something I need to take a look at. So I drive down, they take pics of the accident location and my truck and then drive me over to give a positive ID on the guy who hit me. I did see his face at the accident site, I had my door open and turned to get out and looked him in the face. Well anyways, turns out the guys car started on fire a little later and the police were called and then found out about the hit and run he was involved in. That's when they called me.

So it ended well, the guy had no insurance in the car but claims he has insurance. As for my truck, it took the beating like a champ. The bumper is smashed to **** and bent down, but not a ding or scratch anywhere else on the truck, which I was surprised since he plowed into me. I don't have any pics right now, but maybe will get some up tomorrow.

And a big shout out to the Tucson PD, I was afraid I would never hear that they caught the guy. But they did, and they took him to jail and gave him a $900 fine for no insurance in the vehicle.

I talked to my insurance, and they can't help unless I pay the $500 deductible to get it fixed, and then they are legally able to go after his insurance for the costs. But I won't do that, I will try to get his insurance info from the Police department, and then get them to pay for a used one or whatever I choose to have done. But for now, it will stay as is, and the bumper will most likely be taken off until I get a new one.

Dang Man! Glad you are ok. That was one hard hit! I am amazed it didn't mess anything up other than your bumper & brackets.

being that it is newer and he hit and ran, i would make them pay for a dealer installed rear bumper....make them pay for a brand new Ford part and let Ford dealership put it on...

^^ yup. but i'd pay your insurance deductible and let your company deal with them. They'll get your deductible back and they are a big insurance company, they can get the other guy's insurance to do more than you can.

Ina wierd twisted way, I would like somebody to hit me just to see how my custom steel bumper holds up. I bet it would hold up well, but I can't imagine the same for the other car.

Well I am just concerned that he doesn't have insurance. So if I pay my deductible and get it fixed, then my insurance might just find out that he doesn't have any insurance, and then I am out $500 bucks. So I will call the police and see if he has insurance in the next couple of days. If he does, I will walk right into their office here in town and give them the police report, the pictures and all that good stuff. I think they will pay then. As far as my insurance, it won't go up at all, since I am at no fault.

Nah, Geico, and the lady told me today that they can't go after his insurance unless I decide to have my vehicle fixed through Geico. Soooooooooo, basically I don't *know* for sure if this guy has insurance, since he didn't have it in his vehicle. So I don't want to just go ahead and pay the deductible if I am not certain I will get the money back. I guess I could find out for sure if the guy has insurance through the Police department, and then talk to my insurance. But having never had an accident before, is it pretty likely that I will get reimbursed if my insurance company would go after his?

You would get reimbursed if in fact the guy that hit you has insurance. Like you said, check with the PD first before you go shellin out $500. You could get a new/er bumper for that much. You sure it's only bumper damage? Frame okay?
