Transmission oil change....

I've got an appointment to get my transmission oil changed Saturday at Aamco Transmission shop. They quoted me $79.99 including filter. I bought my Ranger with 31,500 miles on it and it should have been changed at 30,000, I don't know if it was or not, I think it was because it looked clean when I bought it. It's got almost 50,000 on it now, so I'm gonna get it changed whether it needs it or not. The oil is a little dirty but not too bad.

I just got back from having it done. The Aamco tech said that it looked like the oil had been changed and was not the original oil. He put a new filter on. I asked if they just drained or flushed out the tranny and he said they just drain it because flushing it causes too many other problems. He said people will come into his shop after having somebody else flush it out and now it won't go into gear. He says I'm good for another 30-40,000 miles before I have to change it again.

The truck is running like new. Considering it's a 9 year old truck, that's pretty good.

Well I only put on about 2,500 miles a year, so that means if I wait till I put on another 30,000, I'll be due for another tranny oil change in about 12 years !!!

wayne, no reason at those miles they shouldnt have flushed it. esp if there was no problems with the transmission before. sounds like they were being lazy..

hell in my moms van we have had the tranny flushed every 30K...IIRC a drain and fill only replaces about 40% of the old fluid

No he wasn't being lazy, he said there was no need to flush it, and that flushing it might have cause other problems.

It was my decision to have the tranny oil changed not their's. I want my truck to last a long time, and as of right now I'm right on schedule. I want to get at least another 6 years out of it, and it's looking good right now. The oil that was in the tranny was at least 4.5 years old...so in my opinion, it was time.

im all for the change but they should have flushed it instead, flushing doesnt cause damage as long as its done when its scheduled.

Well I'm no tranny tech so I wasn't going to argue with the Aamco tech, he seemed to know a heck of a lot about tranny's. The truck is running fine and the oil on the dipstick looks clean, so I'm happy.

I did the white paper towel test to check the oil, and it looks nice and clean. Much better than before.

The Aamco tech does tranny's 6 days a week, so I put a lot of trust in him. He seemed to know what he's doing.

My '03 has 62k on it. When I bought it last year at 57K it had never been done as far as I could tell. Last winter I dumped out the fluid, changed the filter myself at home and recently dumped the fluid and refilled again. Its obviously not getting out 100% of the fluid but it got a lot of it and it's nice and clean. It is a horribly messy job to do and you might as well say goodbye to whatever shirt you are wearing. No matter how careful you are the old fluid ends up everywhere...all over the floor, in your armpits, all over the tools, etc. but getting dirty once in awhile doesn't hurt anybody.

Well I have a bad heart condition which prevents me from working on my back. I get out of breath very easily. So I can't do this job myself, besides I don't have a lift or the right tools and know nothing about automatic transmissions, so I decided to let a pro do it. Aamco has been in the tranny business for many decades so I decided to let them do it.

I know he put in a new filter, but I'm not sure if he did anything else, but the tranny sure shifts nice now, just as smooth as a new truck. :)

It wasn't bad before, but it's nicer now.

Being that this is your first post I will be nice. First off you need to create your own thread instead of posting in someone's thread to ask a question like that. Second you would be better off getting a different truck. Swapping isn't really worth it unless you know what your doing and have the proper tools to get the job done. Other then that welcome to RF.
