Something everyone should have on a trail ride
 

I am sure we could all find a list of supplies that are "needed" for a proper off road trip. This weekend I found the one thing that will be better than all others that you could put on a list. This thing is perfect for freeing a stuck truck, has the ability to think through problems, and is able to fix things with ease. You are all thinking what are you nuts this is stupid nothing can do this but you are wrong. There is such a thing that can. It is a nessecity to have out on a trail ride. Whether in the sand, mud, water, or even a hill.



What is it you ask what could possibly give you all these things? I will tell you. And once I do try your hardest to get one although I don't know if it is going to be possible for all there is however a select few of us who are lucky enough to be blessed with the ability to be around John Griggs. Yes everyone needs there own N3elz out on the trail.

I say this because my alternator died out on the trail and John says oh thats okay I have a spare we can make it work. So we fixed my truck despite my inability to hold onto anything. And I was able to finish a great day of wheeling.

Props to John for his planning and help.

Ha ha! After I fixed it, I said: "Bryan, you have to give me props on Ranger-Forums" and he said "oh, I will!"...a man of his word, lol.

Well, truthfully, I had the alternator in case I needed it not someone else, but it came in handy anyway. :wink:

John is a great guy! Very generous as well as knowledgeable! I think me and Bryan need to chip in on a Christmas gift for Mr. Griggs. Anyone else feel the need to chip in? I'm sure there's more :smirk:

On a side note, I can't wait to get back out there! lol

No, please don't buy me anything. Go drop a little extra money on a Christmas charity or something if you want to "honor" me, lol. Give the "bell ringers" at the store a few extra dollars for me. :wink:

Actually a little better than that, lol. We took his old one out, and repaired it using parts from the spare, then re-installed it.

I was reading about the trip...and was reading about John saying, "oh I've got an extra alternator.." WTF? Who has an extra alternator and has the skills to fix it on the trails?

Seriously it is important to be prepared on the trail. After my experience I will prolly carry around a spare alternator since this seems to be something that can be a problem being on the front of the engine and taking alot of mud and water. Hopefully I can find a cheap one that will be the spare.

You have a skid plate? I'd try an alternator shield as well...

i learned how to fix an alternator. all it is is a lil electric motor with springs and magnets sorrounding a coil. the alternator in our camaro died about 10yrs ago, and my dads best freind - THE GOD of all mechanics, showed me and my buddy how to 'correctly' rebuild an alternator. its pretty easy, you justy gotta take it apart pay attention to detail, not lose any of the lil springs and cross ur fingers and pray it works LOL
