Spare tire key.... Kinda can't find it.... Replacement?

Anyone know how to go about getting a replacement? I don't know where mine is, and the last time I remember seeing it is Dec 17th, on the day of the accident. I've looked through the house here, tore the truck apart, and still can't find it, so the question,

Where can I get a replacement "Long" spare tire key, and for my own comfort, a new lock cylinder to replace the lost key?

PickupMan92 03-16-2005 11:32 AM

you tlaking bout the long tube you stick in to turn the spare down?

SuperSonicFX4 03-16-2005 11:41 AM

I think he is talking about the key that locks you out from sticking the handle in to turn the spare down.

shadyluke 03-16-2005 11:43 AM

No hes talking about the lock that fits in the hole that you stick the long tude in to get the spare tire down. If the lock is stuck in it your gonna have to get someone to get it out then just go to a dealer and buy a new assembly.

Shalafi49 03-16-2005 11:48 AM

No he is talking about the key to my house...oh wait maybe not

W1CKY 03-16-2005 01:13 PM

I'm talking about the thing I stick in the hole (that didn't come out right!) but yea, the key with the long shaft so I can unlock the tube I stick the rod in, The easy part will be getting the old one out, just need to know if ford has a supply of them...

shadyluke 03-16-2005 06:31 PM

I'd be willing to bet. If not go test drive a new one and stop a lil down the road. Maybe it will disappear.

rngprerunner 03-16-2005 06:43 PM

Yes you can get them from Ford. My buddy had to do this with his Superduty. They sold him the truck but didnt give him a key to the lock so Parts had to order one for him and they cut it there. So yea, just go see your friendly neighborhood parts guy!

They are keyed like the truck, well the first half of the key anyway, so that plan wouldnt work too well  (I can use mine to turn the pas. air bag on and off)

ranger024x4 03-16-2005 06:50 PM

WOW!!! i didnt know that rangers had these... lol my truck dont got one....

loneFX4 03-16-2005 07:19 PM

You can buy them from Ford. It seems like only some packages came with the locks, like the XLT's have them but the XL's dont (for example).. but I have no clue what does and doesnt...

quicksilver2001 03-16-2005 08:22 PM

i might be interested in getting one, i got a xlt, but no lock :( maybe i will stop by the dealership tomorrow.

Well my 99 is keyed like the truck... which type did you have? I have heard there actually two differant ones.. but yea, my 99 is keyed the same...

W1CKY 03-16-2005 10:47 PM

Mine wasn't keyed the same, I dunno if I'd like it being the same (but on the other hand, I do!)

I take that back, its not exact, just real close. I never took that close of a look, never had a reason.. but it still looks cut individualy

And you can buy them from the dealer, and they do cut them, at least they do for the superduty ones at my dealership.. which are the same as rangers...

What would be the point to have a lock when all the millions and millons of Ranger owners could steel your tire?

My '99 XL Sport had such a lock, however my '03 LII (an XLT by all counts) doesn't. I thought Ford had just done away w/ these locks but (in typical Ford fasion) left the bracket for the locks there (under the tailgate).

Matt, might it be cheaper to just drill the thing out and toss it? Lock your spare in w/ a length of chain and a padlock. That could be cheaper and easier in the end..

That's how it used to be but none of the Rangers come with spare tire locks anymore. I think the old long-keyed type lock is out of production but there is a newer version that takes a special key like a wheel lock. It is $12 from Ford and listed for 2003~2005 Rangers:

Here is the earlier version that used a long key and removeable lock. I have one from a 2000 on my 2003. Fits perfectly.

Neither is heavy duty or totally theftproof but most thieves will move on to another, easier truck.

Go look at the access hole for the crank handle (below the tailgate). If there is no lock there, you don't have a key. Probably never had one on an 02.

NHBubba_Revisited 03-17-2005 08:38 AM

My key came in my little book w/ the owner's manual. There was a special loop on the binding of the vynl book thingie w/ the zipper. My dealer showed me how to work the lock when I took delivery. I bet yours doesn't have such a lock. You can tell by looking between the rear bumper and the bottom of the tailgate. There's a hole where you have to stick the folding rod jobbie to get to the winch that lowers the spare from under the bed of the truck. If you see a key-hole, then you have a lock, if you see a hole right through to the winch mechanism, then you don't..

I didn't get one with my truck. Wonder why? Our trucks are clones otherwise. Luckily I remembered to pull the one off my 2000 Ranger.

NHBubba_Revisited 03-17-2005 09:38 AM

Sorry! When I said my truck came w/ a lock I meant my last truck, my '99 XL Sport. The '03 LII did NOT have a lock (nor key!). I didn't realize it until after I had 'taken delivery'. I wish I had thought to take the lock from my '99 when I traded. Ironically I remembered to pull just about every mod of value out of the '99 when I traded, including the fancy rubber floor mats I had bought.. and didn't end up using most of it! The original equipment stuff in the '03 was far better than the aftermarket crap I thought was so great in the '99..

That's a relief! I was feeling like a foolish chump victimized by a money-grubbing, bloodthirsty dealer.
