Speedometer failure/replace instrument cluster?
1993 Ford Ranger XLT 4x2 Extended cab 4.0L V6/automatic
So the speedometer needle has had a minor vibration to it for a while, but today on my way to work it started jumping around like a wild monkey ( +/- 30mph, wouldnt stay steady until under 10mph). The odometer however is still working (verified by tracking mile markers on interstate and comparing to odometer reading). I assume this indicates its the speedometer unit itself in the cluster and not something more severe like the actual cable? I was planning on doing a swap with one with a tachometer anyways, just now need to get this done asap while the weather holds up (gotta love Colorado's climate). Planning on just getting one from a pull and save, Im not to concerned about the odometer as Colorado here mileage is exempt for that age. Also and tips/advice for for getting the cluster out? Im going to review any posts I can find as well as the factory shop manuals instructions as well. |
1993/4 cluster from V6 should be plug and play
Odometer moves too slow to see a cable issue in most cases, so when at the pick and pull you may want to grab a cable Speedo cable gets a broken strand inside and it hangs up on sheath and then releases as the rest of the cable spins, so miles traveled(odo) would be correct but speedo needle bounces as a result of the hang up and release Info here on getting cluster out: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...edometer.shtml The speedometer cable release can be a pain since its hard to get your hand in, lol Also when any cluster is out ALWAYS replace the 6 backlight bulbs, I "think" they are 194s but check |
