Sport trac cluster Tach problem

Finally finished changing over mileage to be the same as my truck and installed everything back in same as my other ranger cluster that was always in the truck and got a problem.

Everything except the tach will work, speedo seems to be set right (I drove around the block), seatbelt lights etc.

Anyone have any ideas? I never touched anything but the speedo motor following this how to on rf, exactly and just changed the odometer to be the same as the cluster being removed.

Anyone have any ideas? I shouldnt have to reset the computer and everything should I? Or is there a way to like the spedo jump my tach to check tha its working ?

Make sure that the needle on the tach didn't get pushed down too far.

There's space between it and the faces it doesnt look pushed down. I just didnt want to if I could help it popping it off cause I dont know where it would be back on right .

Just for good measure I would take the cluster back out and just move the needle out a lil and see if that helps. Also try plugging in the stock cluster and see if the tach works, just in case something broke with the install. If the stock clusters tach works and the ST tach still dosen't try taking it apart and putting it back together.

Ill run out and plug the stock one in see what happens. I just poped the tach off and moved it up off the bump stop and still didnt move when i reved the truck so I duno whats going on. Wish i knew of a way to test the tach with a battery or something.

Ok My one that was in the truck tachs working so must be a problem with the sport trac cluster I guess sadly. So is there a way to check if Im screwed here, or what options do I have? I dunno if I could swap out tachs from one cluster to another, if its just a motor problem or if I can test the sport trac cluster to check if the motor is indeed bad.

you will have to pull the overlays from the stock cluster and put the sport trac ones on it. i did this today cuz there was a problem with my explorer cluster as well. follow the how-to on calibrating speedometer unless u already know about it. don't just go pulling needles if u don't know what ur doing...makes things more difficult.

So this is my only option then?

I was hoping same as how you calibrate the spedo I could use that sort of method somehow to check the tach, is it possible? There's 4 pins for the tach I dont know whats what though.

I havn't done the tach yet using the same trick for the speedo...it's entirely possible I presume.

IMO...TRY IT OUTTT!! lol. Swap the tach motor. Don't swap the overlay, instead, swap the tach motor. I need to do that to my spare sport trac cluster because the tach is a little wacky I'm told.

just to make mine run properly i pulled the overlays from the expo one and put them on my stock cluster just so i don't run into problems but def. try what Shane said. that was the second time i pulled the overlays on my stock cluster lol first was to sand them now to replace haha

Andrew_2006 06-06-2009 11:05 AM

I think Im going to go ahead and try swapping the tach motors guessing thats where my problem lies.
