Spring rates for STX
Spring rates for STX
I have been having quite a time with shocks. The Monroe LT shock is on it now and I am pretty much happy. The extent of my troubles is what bothers me. Today, as in the present time, MOOG has some sort of P?N listed for lots of Rangers and nothing specific for my 96 STX. I bought the specific STX spring years ago and mistakenly ordered TWO sets. Still got one NIB. But it nags me "are the STX springs much stronger that the rest? Is there any difference and why did I have a different spring number back then for the Ranger 4X4 and the STX? The MOOG spring is P/N CC870.
Thanks
Thanks
My door label says "BW-X" and I have a STX so I guess I have the stiffest springs. 2740 and 2570 pounds are what the GW rating is. My rear leaf spring has two full length leafs and a shorty over-load leaf.
I guess I shoukld have started with installeng lighter springs for a street only/mostly truck to get the best, though not soft, ride.
I am happy with her as she is and i guess it is some comfort that she would do her best if I have to take her off road. I do pull a 7K ound cargo trailer and she does that well but not frequently.
Comments?
Thanks, John

Really depends on use.
I don't do higher speed off-roading or fly off hills, so I use softer springs and shocks, I don't need fast recovery, I drive slower and keep wheels on the ground.
Just my way and what I enjoy.
And I want a softer ride on the street so..............I am older and comfort is my main concern.
Bouncing around is for the younger generation of off-roaders.
I have overload springs on the back for loads or trailering, but they don't touch the frame until I get over 600lbs in/on the bed or bumper

Ron,
I am right in there with you in your tastes and druthers. I might be a little older and slower, however.
I would order a truck specked like yours for the same reasons. I bought this rig used so all I got to choose was 4X4 and extended cab and 5 speed and a 4.0 liter. And that was being picky and I looked for a good one for a while. I am now happy with the truck in every regard but the shock thing was a trial. Even with stiffer springs I should not have had all the grief. From your info I can now see why all the OE stuff had woefully inadequate dampening. No excuse for the Bilsteins coming without fluid though.

Ron,
Just so I don't repeat the mistake of NOT ASKING: I might install a sifter set of coils in the front and kinder leafs in the rear. Because I will infrequently pull a 5K pound trailer I want to cover that tongue weight also. I guess a simple install of the right coils in the front would be XLT 4X4? I like air bags for the rear for their adjustability but which are better and cheaper if I have a choice.
Thanks to you and the others that offered advice.
