Starting problem

My '09 Ranger has an intermittent starting problem, doesn't matter if engine is cold or hot, will crank, but won't start. Always starts after a couple trys, seems to be getting worse. Just replaced fuel filter and has a new K&N air filter. Any ideas other than take it to the dealer?

Get the OBD codes read and if there are any , post them here (you don't have to have a CEL on for there to be a code logged).

Shinerbox 08-11-2011 11:27 AM

No CEL and no codes showing

After 1 failed attempt. Cycle the key from off to on a few times, then try again. That runs the fuel pump a few times.

Shinerbox 08-11-2011 11:34 AM

I've tried that, also pressing the gas pedal in, hard to say if that has any affect, because it's intermittent, sometimes it fires right up, then other times it doesn't.

OTRtech 08-11-2011 11:34 AM

Has the truck ever been in a wreck? Could be an iffy inertia switch.

Shinerbox 08-11-2011 11:37 AM

No, bought it new..

Shinerbox 08-17-2011 11:09 AM

Ok, last few days been turning the key off an on a few times before cranking, and it starts up every time, so what does that mean?

vista4.0 08-17-2011 11:15 AM

My 07 does this every once and a while. As far as i know its nothing you can fix. No big deal.

Rangerguy 08-17-2011 11:22 AM

Could be your fuel pump.

Theres a check valve that keeps the lines pressurized. If it fails it takes, clicking start from on/off a few times gets the fuel lines primed again. I had this problem a year ago, replaced the pump, now its fine. Not sure if the check valve is replacable in yours, mine wasn't. Its annoying for sure, I drove it a long time before I replaced it. You still under warranty? Have the dealer check it out.

vista4.0 08-17-2011 11:25 AM

I took mine to the dealer and they said it was normal which yes it could be your fuel pump but i know at least half a dozen rangers in my area that all have done the same thing.

07rangersport 08-17-2011 03:27 PM

My 07 did the same thing. It never left me stranded so I never worried too much about it

powerlifter0085 01-10-2012 11:09 AM

my 94 ford ranger 4.0 does that in the morning or when sits a for a couple of hours i have to do the priming cycle turning key back and forth about 5times and starts up after and its fine i put a new fuel pressure regulater on it and still didnt hold the fuel pressure so i'm going to put a new fuel pump in it couse they say the fuel check vavle in a part of it and you have to get new fuel pump but does anyone know where the fuel pump check valve is what is it a part of

meistreguy 01-10-2012 01:05 PM

Yeah, sounds like your pressure valve is on its way out. Fortunately, it is easy to swap in a new fuel pump on our pickups which is what I recommend.

powerlifter0085 01-10-2012 01:29 PM

that means the fuel check valve is going and have to get a new fuel pump i know it ant the fuel pressure regulater couse i just put a new one in 2 days ago

OTRtech 01-10-2012 01:40 PM

And while you have the box off the truck to change the fuel pump , change out the old, rusty brake lines going to the rear end , since you have room to work.

satinsky2 01-12-2012 05:11 PM

I have a 2003 ranger, had new fuel pump put in about 200 miles ago, plus tune up. Filled up gas tank drove a couple of blocks and truck died and would not start again. Charged battery, still no start. I have codes p0316 and p0457. put on new fuel cap, did not help. check engine light and check fuel cap light still on. any idea what problem could be? thank you for any reply.

Try resetting the inertia switch .It's mounted in the passenger side footwell.
If that doesn't work , swap out the fuel pump relay in the distribution box under the hood.

starting problem

After the truck set for two days, I went and tried to start it today, and it did start, but seems to be running kind of rough. Also, last nite, I turned the ignition switch on and off five times, as someone else suggested. truck didn't start last nite, but did today?

oabudoo1@gmail.com 11-19-2015 08:15 PM

My truck starts well when the engine is cold but as soon as it gets heated up it wont
start. I have to let it cooled down before it will start again

The check valve in the pump assembly has failed. Mine was doing the same thing. Until it didn't. It failed completely; no fuel pressure. Lucky for me it was in the driveway when it stopped.

Use a good replacement, Motorcraft or Delphi or you will be doing it again sooner rather than later. They cost more; but, your labor is worth something.
