Tank range?

Hey guys,
I just recently purchased a 2003 Ranger FX4 Level II and have been having a lot of fun with it. I just recently took two 250 mile trips in it and I am starting to see the ultra low mpg that I feared. I filled the tank up before each trip and was almost bone dry by the end of both. The trip was all highway at speeds of 65-75 mph using cruise control.
The question here was can 260 or so miles really be all I can expect out of a single tank? Seems a little low, I thought most vehicles at least got over 300. Also, it says its supposed to have a 19.5 gallon tank but I can only squeeze 15-16 gallons in there. So do I have something wrong with the truck or is this really the fuel economy that I should expect to be seeing? Thanks for any replies, and I've included a couple of photos of her for you to see!

You can only get 15 to 16 gallons in the tank because there is a reserve with the gauge, empty is not really empty. Your truck has typical gas mileage but a little low for highway only. I can only get 260 miles a tank but I have 2-3 gallons left in the tank on E.

I used to get about 300-320ish before my gas light would come on. It was a 99, 4.0 4x4 with 31's and 3.73's. 260 sounds a bit low to me

I just filled mine up today... I went 330km (205 miles) on $67 of fuel, it had less than 1/4 tank left. I don't drive the truck much as I think it's been a month or more since I filled it last... and I likely burned a good chunk of that while idling while I dug it out of the snow bank to drive it! lol

I've been getting 360-400km on 60-65L which is aweful, roughly 15-18L/100km or 13-15mpg . I have the same thing with the fuel gauge. I drove with my check gauge light on for 20km and still could only put 64L in it when the extended cab in my manual says it can hold 74L.??? Strange

I've run my truck for around 40 miles after the low fuel light has come on and I have never run out of fuel in it.

I have also pumped more than 20 gallons of fuel into my tank as well. Then again, i don't fill it up, then stop when it clicks off. I tend to fill it until I see fuel in the filler neck. Yes, I top it off, no, I've never gotten a check engine light because of it either.

I do about 80% freeway driving and I can get around 320-330 miles out of a tank before the low fuel light comes on. Sometimes I can get better mileage and BARELY crack over 400 miles out of a tank. That's pushing it, but I've done it a few times.

2WD though....

I get about 350miles on 60 litres, motorway mileage, but only about 270 to 300 on daily short runs and in town. That's a for a 2003 Supercab 4x4, 2.5 turbo-diesel. I once managed 400 miles but had to tailgate lorries all the way up the motorway home to get that.

Winter time I can get about 250-295 to a tank. Summer is more like 275-330 depending on if I'm hauling something. What tire pressure are you using.

Wirelessly posted (Android)

The best I have ever got was about 350 on 15.5 gal. That was summer with 31s and 3.73s and a 5 speed. With 4.10s the best I ever saw was 315 and I was going about 55 MPH. Average in the winter is 250 to 260 that with only using 15.5 gal is still around 16 to 17 MPG which is EPA est.

I used to be happy at 300mi for a tank (18 gal). Now if I am under 400 I am articulated with my gauges.
BUT I cheated. 4/5 DROP, K&n filter, and Superchips tuner. Plus mine is 2 Ed and clutch. So I can go neutral like the sweeds when I am going down hill.

i found that my truck sucks down gas like no other at 70+ mph. With these gas prices today, I will not drive above 70 in my truck. I average 16ish mpg normal driving in my 02 fx4.

i'm getting 400-450 kms in the winter (270ish in miles?) summer i can get 550kms (330 miles). this is mostly city some highway. i do the same as cougar. i run my tank close to empty and fill till there is fuel in the neck.

when is the last time you did a tune up? also winter gas sucks. all the additives hurt mileage.

I drove a 3.0 v6 automatic for 16 years
city driving 220-260 miles per tank avg 13mpg
hiway 320-350 miles per tank avg 17mpg
based on 19 gals of gas per fill up 1 gal left in reserve

I have pumped just over 20 gals before she was full a few times (had to be sucking fumes)

you guys will fill it up to the filler neck until you gotta buy a charcoal canister because its full of raw fuel...also, when you fill after it clicks off, the gas will go back into the nozzles internal vent and back into the tank in the ground
