Exhaust for the 4.0...Not sure what to go with?
Hey everyone,
I am new here. I have been lurking for a month or 2 but just got my Ranger a few weeks ago. Im 17 and this is my second car (first car some how ended up wrapped around a tree????) Its a black 99 4x4 (4.0 auto) with the Off-Road package on it. I am avoiding all trees, and beginning to start the customizing process. The first thing I want to do is put dual exhaust on it. All of my friends with trucks have no muffler. They went with dual straight pipes. It sounds great and I would love mine to sound like that but I was just wondering what everyone prefered. Do most of you guys have mufflers? If so what kind, and what does it sound like? Again I have the 4.0 and just want my truck to roar. What do you guys think I should go with? I do not have a huge amount of money to work with. Anything over $300 is way over my head. I would like to keep it under $250 if possible.
Thanks,
Chris

Something easily affordable, get a Flowmaster 40 series, 2.5" SI/DO...I think they make a single in dual out at that size..and cut off your muffler then put the flowmaster on. Then get downturns or get a muffler shop to weld it up and put tips out the side in front of your tire. Flowmaster will make that sound you want, but it'll sound really good.

biggest problem with that is the loss of backpressure. youre 99 4.0 is the OHV, its a torque motor, so youll need all the torque you can get. it doesnt have the high end to pull you along, so with your engine i would use a muffler, and not go crazy with pipe size, if you do duals i would say 2.25 pipe. you need to keep some backpressure in the system or all your low end torque goes whooooosh right out the pipe
