4.0 OHC motors call for 5w30, this is the only engine ford makes that uses this grade of oil, all other 2001 and up ford engines take 5w20.
the 4.0 OHC engine uses the thicker oil due to timing chain lube issues.
all other ford engines use 5w20 , thiner oil, for tighter bearing tollerances and fuel economy.
ford issued a TSB a few years ago recomending all older cars and trucks to use 5w20 except the 4.0OHC ehgine.

I just got my 2003 Ranger in March and it's almost time for an oil change, so I'm following this thread closely. A friend says he puts Mobile 1 in his Ranger. That sounds okay to me, but I don't like the idea of waiting 5,10, or even 15,000 miles between oil changes, because, lets say your oil get's some metal dust in it, do you want that dust circulating thru your engine for a prolonged period ?? I don't. The viscosity of the oil still may be good, but it could be contaminated. So oil changes at 3,000 miles still makes sense to me. So now the question is, regular oil or synthetic ??I've heard that the synthetic really does cut down on engine wear.....so maybe my answer is synthetic oil every 3,000 miles ?? Synthetic oil may be more money, but what does a new engine cost ?? I'm thinking it's worth it, and will really make a difference when the truck has 100,000 + miles on it.

My ranger is just as important as if I owned any of them vehicles.
I use a oil very close to the mobil 1 in my quads, since it dosent break down as easy under harsh conditions, it always seems to stay cooler. I do not use it in my truck since I do not feel it is needed. But for others that do its just added insurance IMO

I knew an old garage mechanic who told me the secret to get an engine to last a long time was oil changes every 3,000. I want my engine to last a long time, so if synthetic oil is better, then great. I may have to nurse this truck along for many, many years. So taking good care of it now will payoff later.
Slapping big tires on and running it thru mud and brush is not my idea of taking good care of a vehicle. Sure it may be fun for a little while, but when resale times comes............

you can get 350K out of any 3.0 even if you dont change the oil every 3K and use the no name cheap stuff like what we sell to non informed customers at work!
i personaly cant see spending any more then the 18 bucks i spend every 5K, i'd rather buy a few gallons of gas with the saved money.

I went to the Mobile site to see what they said about Mobile 1 synthetic oil, and they have done a test using taxi cabs from Las Vegas....goto this link and click on video, to see and hear the results.....

After watching this, I think I'm going to go with Mobile 1 oil.
