Icon5 Swapping a 3.0 for a 4.0......

This is just a question that I am asking as I have no idea what all would be involved in doing this, but how hard wold it be to swap my 3.0 FF out of my 2000 Ranger for a 4.0 out of a late model Ranger or Explorer? What all would be involved parts wise in a swap like this. Since my truck is the FF motor I am sure that I would need computer and wiring harness along with the motor or am I wrong? Any input on this would be great. I am not in a position to sell or trade my truck so that is why I am pondering this.

You would need the motor, the transmission, the PCM. There are a lot of small odds and ends you probably wouldn't realize you needed until the swap was under way. I'm sure you'd need the exhaust system, or at least the manifolds.

Doable for sure if you can spare the downtime and have the knowledge and tools. I wouldn't jump into something like this if you have no experience working on engines.

yeah I have limited exp. working on engines and I figured that this would be a pretty large task to undertake. Like I said it was just kind of an open ended questions to test the waters. Thanks for the reply.

In all honesty the 3.0 to 4.0 swap is probably the easiest motor swap you can do on a ranger. Do a lot of research and cover all the bases and you could probably pull it off, but don't just dive in head first not knowing what you'd be getting into. Also realize that you'd probably be without your truck for a couple of weeks as a motor swap isn't really a weekend project so you'd need something else to drive. After you do your homework you can decide if you wanna take on the project or if its over your head.

Being without my truck would not be big deal as my wife and I drive together to work so my truck does a lot of sitting at the house. When you say transmission is there certain transmissions that work with the later model 4.0? If so which ones?

All the rangers have the basically the same trannys between the different motors, but the outer cases are different for each motor. You would have to get a tranny from a 4.0 2001-present.
