ive wanted to do the explorer 8.8 w/ disc axel swap for my 1996 4x4. i have the 8.8 axle 28 spline w/ drums (kinda sucks). So I really need the disc brake upgrade now.

and for $200 :I found an explorer 8.8 axle with discs. welded differential and 5.13 gears.

however... i dont want a welded diff and want 4.88 gears.
if i buy it. can i take out the welded diff and put in a limited slip diff?

then i would sell the 5.13 and buy 4.88.

any advice?? can i switch out the welded diff and how would i do that??

im runnin stock 4.10s in the 28 spline 8.8. i just did a body lift and have 7 inches of lift so im getting 35/ 36s soon. i definantly need discs and 4.88s!!!

 

a welded diff will come out just like an open diff. Get your L/S and gears and have them installed, will be about 200-300 to get them installed.

 

You're going to run 35's, 4.88's, and then only get a limited slip?
You could buy an aussie locker for around $250 and re-use the open carrier. Just FYI.

 

^^ i have to agree thats one of the other reasons i got an explorer axle for my truck. you cant get an aussie for the 28 spline but you can for the 31 so i would get an aussie and 4.88s thats my plan

 

im not 100% sure whats in my 28 spline 8.8 on my truck now. i think its a limited slip. i could possible throw my l/s in their with my 4.10s in the new axle now until i can get 4.88s and a locker.

or i could keep the old axle together and try to sell it as a whole.. do people really buy these things?? any idea about how much to ask for it? on 88k on the truck
