tailgate question

How much weight is safe to have on our tailgates?

Rolldogg 01-16-2009 03:59 PM

I've stood on mine, so I know it can at least hold 215lbs. Guess it all matters on your cables.

Before I replaced them I never put all my weight on the tailgate, and glad I never did. A friend of mine, who weighs less, leaned on the tail gate while it was down and it snapped a cable....sent him to the floor pretty quick too....LOL

I'd figure you'd be o.k for 300lbs, but I wouldn't personally go higher.

You just curious or looking to do something?

I haul my quad with the rear wheels on the tailgate because i have a toolbox in the bed and i haven't had any problems. I don't think the rear weighs any more than 250 but I wouldn't go any more than 300lbs like rolldogg said. It all depends on your cables and how far your going.

i hauled my dads 82 honda magna 750 motorcycle to the shop a few months ago and my gate seems fine

i need to adjust it though cause i think i bent it when i drove back from wisconsin cause all the weight from my boat was leanin on the right side

I'm a little bit embarassed to say this but, when i'm at work and we all decide to go on a smoke break we all sit in the back of my truck. I was never to crazy about this but i figured it couldn't hurt too much. Then one day one of my friends who weighs an estimated 300 or damn close, shes about twice the size of me. she comes and sits next to me on my tailgate and i'm freakin out. finally i came up with an excuse to get her off of it

i have the same cables since 94 and i haul my snowmobile all the time lol maybe ur cables were made in china lol

I know for a fact that the older F-series had a rating of 1 ton on the tailgate. I am not saying at all that you could put that on our tailgates but I could easily see putting 500 lbs on it. I do not know though if I would want to put 1000 lbs on it.

replace your cables if their old! one of mine rusted through, luckily it broke when I wasnt standing on it or something, I really need to go get a new set, I've been using just one, and Its gonna break out from under me eventually.

im 6ft @ 300lbs and my father in-law is over 200lbs and we sit on my tail gate when my wife drives us through the property hauling fire wood or yard waste or burn trash or what ever and the property is pretty bouncy so we bob around a bit

Blackonblackfx4 01-16-2009 08:25 PM

I've loaded up Sleds in the back of my truck, its fine with the gate down, but if you lift your sled and close the tail gate on ragers the ****ty little peices at the bottom bend and then it never closes well. Heavest sled on the tailgate, 700lb's ( makes the truck squat down)
I wonder where you could get stronger ones?

Melt 01-16-2009 08:39 PM

they make 5th wheel gates (lord knows why) for rangers i bet they are a bit stronger.
