i started my truck this morning to head off to school and i noticed the check gages light was on. well i have a quarter tank... that aint it... and then i see the oil needle sitting where it's supposed to be, and then CLUNK. it drops down, hits the bottom of the gauge, and pops back up to where it should be... and then back down...

how would i know if i was getting oil pressure, yeah i know this is a nooob as question but im concerned here! i think if i wasnt getting any oil my truck wouldnt be running, right?

th eonly think i can think of is maybe i smacked the sending unit when i got stuck in a lake last friday night....

 

If your oil pressure drops too low you will get a knocking sounds, almost like a small diesel motor. More than likely you need a new oil pressure sensor. I need one but have just been too lazy to buy it and replace.

 

It's more than likely your sending unit. Mine did the same thing, until it flipped under the little needle. So don't wait too long to get it changed, like I did.

 

Oil Sending Unit. It's the sensor, and it's pretty easy to change.

 

Time for a new sending unit. The one on my truck used to do the same thing. Replaced the sending and works great now.

 

I had something similar and figured it was the sending unit. I already have the unit but some help on where it's located would be nice. Anyone?

 

Very back of engine by firewall on the 3.0 anyway.

 

Replace the sending unit ASAP. When my oil pump died, the gauge flipped around for a minute or 2 before it just dropped to 0. I pulled it over. Then the next day I replaced the oil pressure switch. When i still had no oil pressure, I knew it was the pump.

My point is, don't rule out the possibility of your oil pump dieing on you.

 

That's my hope that it isn't something else but the switch is the first step. Does "very back of the engine near the firewall" mean it's almost impossible to reach or that it's right on the back where anyone can get to it with a wrench and 5 mins worth of time? I took a quick look but it was hot and I couldn't see it immediately. I'll check again with a flashlight when I get home.

 

Same thing with me. It was the Oil Pressure SU. Kind of a pain to replace but you should do it ASAP

 

I dont think mine was in the back of the engine bay, I think mine was above the engine crossmember..

 

Anyone got a pic of where I should be looking on a 2000 Ranger 3.0?

 

I still haven't been able to find the thing! I've been all over the engine compartment with a flashlight and still no luck. I have a 3.0 so ANY help would be appreciated. Is it on the back of the engine? Passenger or drivers side?

 

From what I can tell from crappy diagrams, it's at the right rear (passenger side) of the engine.

To replace the oil pan gasket, the book says you have to remove the engine.. Everything is designed the way it is to move smoothly and in a quick manner down the assembly line at the plant, not so technicians can make money...

Here's your question: Why is nothing on this truck easy to get to?

 

Not too sure about your 00, but it can't be too different from my 01 3.0L.

First off, get down behind the front left tire and look under the truck and up to where the tranny meets the engine. Just almost at the top of the tranny at the back of the engine, you should see a sensor about the size of a spark plug with a wired harness off it. It'll be all by itself back there, nothing else around it.

It's just another one of those common Ranger issues that we seem to have a lot of. I replaced mine a few years back because of the same thing. Seem to act up when the temperature got cooler, especially in the morning with the first start of the day.

I was thinking passenger side and left came in my head..........I forgot to put my hands in front of my face and make an L with my thumb and index finger to see which one was the correct L shape. My bad there bud. You get a cookie!!
