Towing with Bama tuner...bad idea?

I seem to remeber reading somewhere that it is a bad idea to tow trailers with the "performance" tune on. I have always put mine back to stock mode when I tow our 3500lb boat and trailer based on this as my programmer has no tow/haul program. Is this necessary or just rumor? I try to take it very easy when I pull the boat anyway, no full-throttle take offs or anything like that because it's hard on the trans and such things. The toughest thing I ask of the Ranger is pulling it up the boat ramp out of the water but it does OK.

I'd put it back to stock, just in case. A guy over on RPS blew his 3.0 about a month or two ago towing a trailer with a performance tune on it. Granted it was cross country, but I'd rather have a bit less power for the towing than have to put in a new motor.

Just my opinion though.

Don't they have specific towing tunes? You could invest in one of those if you tow a lot.

i run mine on the torque 91 setting when i'm towing. one of the reasons i got the tuner was to help with towing

That'd work too. I wouldn't run a performance tune for it though.

if i remember correctly, a performance tune ups the timing to get more hp, while a torque tune reduces the timing for more torque

^^true....

if you want to tow with the X2 tune installed, switch to a Torque tune....DON'T run a performance tune while towing.....

a performance tune puts your HP/TQ numbers higher in the rpm band were you need them for racing.....

a torque tune puts your HP/TQ numbers lower in the rpm band were you would need them for towing....

its all BS, its not going to matter which tune you are in.

i have towed more stuff than most anyone on here and rps and i have had the tuner with bama's tunes on it since 15k miles on the clock. i have had it in both and have been running 87 performance for the last 30k miles and have done alot of towing.

perfect example is i ran 80-85mph with OD on and off for 5 hours to the dunes pulling 3500+ lbs while being on 35" tires and not to mention i had 83k miles on my truck at that point.

its not going to matter which tune you are in.

that guy that blew his engine just had a stroke of bad luck. also he towed through mountains and we have no idea what his maintenance routine was.

towing is always harder on your ride, you have to plan your maintenance around how you use the truck, whether its for towing, mudding, wheeling, or for a DD.

I have towed many miles across the country with the 87 performance tune. I am approaching 75,000 miles and have no problems. I tried towing with the 91 torque tune and it did pull better but I did not like the extra cost of fuel.

I cruise at 70 to 75 mph and never use OD with my manual transmission when towing.
