i checked the junkyard and the guy said for what i want its gonna be around 300-350. i got the hook up to a huge junkyard that only sells to businesses so it wont even be near as much there. im wanting 4.10 and posi. it would cost more than 300 to put that in my rear end.

okay.
next, ask yourself, "who would be in the market for an 8.8 rear end with 3.55 gearing"
a) someone who just blew up their stock 8.8 w/3.55 after several hundred thousand miles
(this would be a very low number, typically)
b) someone who just removed their lift kit(s) and large tires, and are going back to stock
(this would be a very low number, typically)
c) someone who collects ranger parts
(as above, this would also be a low number, but probably higher than the other two, combined)
given the above, the first law of economics is the law of supply and demand... the rarer and more sought-after an item is, the higher the price... the item you have is 1) not rare, 2) not coveted, and 3) not collectible, except by eccentrics

dang someone is riping you guys off bad. the rear out of an fx4 with 4.10 and posi is anywhere between 250 and 350 where im getting mine from. im probly gonna grab the explorer rear and go to disc brakes while im at it.
but seriously if anyone really wants my rear end make an offer. im not really into driving a LONG distance though.
