Could bad hubs be causing a horrible catching/grinding on 99 4x4

Hey, I'm new to the site so please forgive me if I've posted this in the wrong place. I recently acquired a 99 ext cab ranger 4x4. I've been replacing odd and end parts getting it where I want it but I'm going at it slow be causing I am not much of a mechanic. Recently I found that the hubs were bad/not working properly on the front end. I've ordered manual locking hubs but driving it this evening with old hubs I started getting a bad banging or catching with a serious grinding to follow. This would occur and last only a short time only to happen again about 100 yards down the interstate. At a slower speed it was happening randomly and coming to a complete stop seemed to rest things. I could get a smooth ride for about 200 yards then catch, shake and start all over. I was told the bearing were recently replaced by the previous owner. Could the bad hub be causing this issue? Any info would be helpful.
