warm-up problem

Hey there, I'm wondering if anybody can give me some advice on my Ranger. It's a 1985, 2.3l, automatic transmission. Lately it's been running very rough on start-up. It starts fine and runs smooth for about five minutes then it starts to run rough and almost die unless I rev it up. It does this until its completely warmed up then it smooths out and run fine. I recently had a smog test here in California and all the numbers were fine. Seems to me the problem might involve the EGR valve, but not really sure. I'm hoping somebody can give me some ideas on it. Thanks to everyone.
