NO more than 200lb tongue weight.

NO more than 500lb gross trailer weight.

All the info is on that plastic bumper cover. i konw 200 tongue weight is correct...just don't know on the 500 gross trailer weight.

I have a 1999 Ranger 2x4 Supercab 3.0 5 speed manual. I am looking at getting an ATV. The ATV i am looking at is 600 lbs. The trailer I am looking at is roughly 500 lbs. So with some supplies (mostly in the pickup bed) I am looking at roughly 1200 to 1300 total pounds. I was going to tow this on my bumper cause my bumper says max 200 lbs tongue weight and gross max trailer weight is 2000 lbs So i figure this would be fine as the trailer would only ever have the one ATV in it. So I am not sure what is meant by 200 tonuge 500 max gross trailer weight. My truck also supposedly has the factory towing package but the only thing I can see what that is, is a 4 pronge wireing harness for the trailer. So would this be ok?

^^^ You should be fine, however... After seeing how weak these bumpers really are, I don't recommend towing anything with them. A platform hitch is not very expensive, and is a hell of a lot stronger....

if you'll be pulling any considerable weight, i'd get a frame mounted receiver. The bumper is basically a Class I, but I don't think I'd pull a 2000# trailer with that even if it says I can.

It's like $112 for a hitch. Just do it.

I am looking into getting an actual hitch. I would never be towing more than the ATV and trailer behid the truck, maybe the gas can but thats it. Everything else in the bed. What I would like to know is the guy above posted (oops after you log in, it's the guy below lol) 200 tongue weight (i understand that) But he said 500 gross trailer weight. That I don't get, as the tongue weight is roughly 10% of the gross trailer weight. Which if I recall is the total weight of trailer and cargo in it. Well 500 doesnt seem like much that would like towing around my fat uncle lol.

Also what would I need a class I hitch? Cause a class one is a 200 tongue and 2000 max gross trailer weight? or go Class II or? I have never towed anything with my vehicles, so I am trying to do this so I can be as safe as possible, as some of these ATV trips will be a good distance away.

Get a class 3 hitch....most common for our trucks are 2 and 3. 2 is fine, but why not just get a 3.

Phoned around, getting a class II. As that is what the places recommended for my purposes. Its $189 plus installation (this is canadian funds) And the Class III is $100 (canadian more) Don't know why, cause the price difference between the class I and class II is $50

class 1=1,000lbs. max weight.
class 2=3,000lbs. max
class 3=5,000lbs. max
i guess once you get to the strength of the class 3 it is pretty thich steel so the price goes up a lot.

Got any junkyards up there at all? I got my hitch for $50 and bolted it up in like 10 mins. Holes are already there, just grab the hardware from the donor truck. Just an idea.
