Remove the tensionor if its in the way.

I suggest getting a manual for your truck. Even if its a crappy chilton/haynes. Factory is best.

Tried removing the tensioner but don't know where to start. The manual does not accurately describe my vehicle...also it seems as if the tensioner is attached to the powersteering pump or something

haha thats funny i just spent 3.5 hrs today putting a new water pump on my 93 ranger 4.0L.. mind you i had the old pump off already.. but that time did include scraping off the old gasket..

some tips-

i found it easier to remove the air intake hose thing, rad (2 bolts and its out), remove the fan shroud, then i pulled the 12 bolts out and pry'd on the pump with a big flathead screwdriver and it popped off.. replaced the gasket (the reason for removing WT) and reversed the process to put it back together.

then filled the rad with water and had no leaks, but couldnt start it up because battery was dead(been sitting since august 2009) so i put the charger on it and leaving it until tomorrow night or friday morning.

good luck with swap.. its kind of a pain in the *** but it can be done by an ameture.. hahaha

Bouncing water temp gauge?

Damaged wiring or air bubbles in the system comes to mind.

Once its cold take the rad cap off and let it idle for 10-15 minutes with the heat on full. Top it off, this should take care of air bubbles
