didnt go bigger for a few reasons,
price being the biggest, its tough buying tires off savings lol, if i had a job it would be different, and i probably would have gone all out with some nice muds or something. and once my warranty runs out in another year or so im sure i will be ready for some bigger tires, to go along with some lift.

the wrangler RT/S's are a great tire assuming you never go off-road, which most people never do. I loved mine, they were quiet and rode smooth. They just suck if your not on pavement. and if you think about it thats the way most tires are.

I also bought 265/70/16 a few years ago when I bought my BFG All Terrains. The 265/75/16 tires are actually cheaper than the 265/70/16. The 75s are $10 bucks cheaper a tire (at least with my BFGs). It's still a 31" but a larger 31" tire than the 70s.
I've rubbed many times in the rear with my 265/70s. I actually have parts where the body has been pulled out a bit from the tires pulling and rubbing on it. I'll be doing a t-bar crank and either shackles or add a leaf before I bump up to the 265/75/16.

if this is related to the explorer ... the reason they were blowing up was the exploreres instruction manual had people underinflate the tires due to rollover risks. But everyone blamed firestone and firestone went and did the recall and only way later did they find out that the situation was actually fords fault

Ford had no choice but to lower the psi to reduce the tendency to roll, Firestone knew this yet did not redesign the tire to compensate for the lower psi. You'll notice that the goodyears ford used to replace the firestones never had a problem as they contain an extra skim in the carcass to compensate for the heat generated due to the lower psi.
Car and driver built a rig to blow the tire out in a controlled fashion and found that they could control the explorer after a blowout just as well as any other.
