The "What did you do to your Ranger today" thread
#2980
Bought my '04 a week ago and love it. Just did an oil change (in the process of changing out all fluids to start fresh all around) with Amsoil Series Full Syn 5W-30 and Purolator PureOne filter (awesome filters). Gotta treat the baby right, so tomorrow I'm putting a new fuel filter on and draining/filling the transfer case with Amsoil ATF :)

I have done my own test of 9 different oil brands on my other car along with 7 oil filter types. I run RP 5w-30 with pure one filter in my tC because I change it at 5k (RP breaks down quickly after 5k). Amsoil is more durable for rough/severe apps so the Ranger will be having that over Motorcraft. On my 96way Ranger 2.3 , motorcraft thinned out too much and wore my crankshaft bearings severely.

hmmm I usually just use OEM parts for most things, including filters. For oils I use Casteral simi synthetic. 5w-30. I'm not trying to run the motor for 1 million miles. worst case I'll pull the motor and throw a new one in. or swap it to a v8. P.S. do you guys really see gains in performance off of different brand oils used? Just curious? If so that's sick...I know break down is completely true. Thing I would never use is Pennzoil. Some people swear by it...Problem with that is once you use it, you have to keep using it. It has a wax type compound that coats the inside components. If you then go to another oil it breaks it down over time and you get residue in your engine. almost like a sludge type substance But not really sludge...Does that make since?

I get my oil changed by my cousin who works at belle tire. I pay him 11 dollars and 48 cents.
For that price, i don't care what oil and filter you put in. it gets changed at 3k religiously. about every month and a half.
If gets really bad, try some Seafoam. Many of us have done it to our trucks and i can personally say i saw great gains in it. i had about 170k on the clock when i did mine. now the truck runs like a raped date.

hahahahahahah...plus dude I also hella read that wrong for a second thinking you said date rape.....lol for sure that's awesome! I wouldn't care either. **** that's cheaper than the oil itself. Either way. funny none the less.

I know what the diff 5-20 or 5-30 but when I use 5-30 I got lifter noises, clicking, went back to 5-20 and all is OK.
I use Motorcraft Filters but Mobile 1 Syth Oil, 6K oil changes with a filter in there at 3K and a little more oil. always wondered why there was six qts of oil in a Mobile 1 Case, now I know.
Truck is running good and sound good so all is well.
The idea of what oil to run is preference all that is really needed is CHANGE YOUR OIL and filter regularly, that is what counts.
As far as doing things to the my Ranger, the list is always there but the time is not.
I need a two week vaca with warm weather or a heated garage to just get the interior completed; i.e. new audio system, sound proofing the roof and doors, adding A-Pillar mounted Tweeter Pods, finally bolting down the cntr console, adding the heater to the driver’s side seat and new seat covers.
Then there is the outside; the visor, the new grille, etc, etc…
The list goes on and on.

My '04 oil cap and manual say 5W-30 (the 2.3 and 3.0 state 5W-20)....is there an amendment that Ford put out for their vehicles? I know there was with the tC for my '06. It also was a bit surprising when I read the manual and it said 5W-30 for the 4.0 (page 188):
And the Amsoil Series 5W-30 exceeds the Ford Specification from what I can read:

Drained and filled the transfer case:
Old vs. new:
Pressure bled the brake system to get out the 70K mile/7 year old crap:
Notice the good stuff coming in at the bottom and the old crap floating at the top:
Siphoned out most of the PS fluid as well and replaced with Amsoil ATF....just didn't take a picture.
Rerouted the front axle snorkel up near the brake booster to pretty much guarantee it won't suck in water during off-road fun(follow the yellow line):
Rerouted the rear snorkel for the same reason as the front. This routes all the way up over the spare tire area and into the upper bed rail.....currently about 4 feet above ground surface:
That's it for today :). Fuel filter tomorrow (70K and previous owners never changed it) because I just found a quick video explaining why the metal fuel line tool I got is a waste of money for my year! Gotta love the quick connects they have now.

I joined this forum to get away from juveniles and their inappropriate language and innuendo. I thought this was about helping each other with a common truck and even showing off a little. Guess this is just another one of those places where kids are allowed to pretend they're grown up by modeling immature words and thoughts that were thought of as cool in the second grade. This was posted directly under several juvenile comments and idioms that disappeared when I hit "post!"

Now I see something, the comments are further back in the thread but are "up front" when I get an e-mail. Not to belabor the point, I DO want to continue here and learn, share, and teach so this community of Ranger enthusiasts can benefit and help each other. I am just tired of opening e-mails thinking I can learn something cool or help someone in need, only to find the crass, insulting language of those who need to learn "adult" communication, being front and center because they can. Am I the only one offended? Do the rest of you let your kids read these posts as they sit with you wanting to help you work on your truck or just see what daddy is reading? Would you be offended if I spoke to your wife that way?
