what is the difference
Xl and XLT were just trim levels. VIN will not designate what trim level it was born as.
Vin indicates born on date, where it was birthed, engine, trans, body style, and numerical place in its lineage.
You can usually tell what trim level by the equipment or factory installed accessories, power accessories, vinyl or carpet, ect..
There is a sticker on the drivers side door jam, Federally mandated sticker since 1969, breaks down with numbers and letters other info on vehicle, axle, paint, possible trim on exterior.
Sometimes older vehicles even had a build sheet stuck somewhere inside, behind a piece of trim, under seats...they liked to hide em, but haven's seen one in many years.
You can google up 1984 Ford Ranger vin decoding, and 1984 Ford Ranger Federal Sticker decoding and sites will come up explaining how to determine whats what on your Ranger.

+1 ^^^
As said VIN just has basic info, not even transmission type, manual or auto, serial number at the end of VIN will have all the info but you need Fords data base to decode it
1985 Ford Ranger Brochure here: https://www.therangerstation.com/res...r_brochure.pdf
Couldn't find a FREE 1984 Brochure but you can buy one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1984-FORD-R...-/202773131454
Brochures have the TRIM levels listed, so you can see what you have and don't have, that will tell you the trim level
