if its the stock spare, the hitch has nothing to do with it. The part that holds the tire under the bed or the cable either rotted off or they're just too lazy to put it back where it goes.

yeah the plate is usually what falls off when they get really rusty and without that the tire isn't going back on lol. I rarely carry my spare and theres no way it would fit in the stock spare location. When i do have it, it goes in the bed

Also if you install back dual exit exhaust you may find space troubles with the spare...

only issue with exhaust you'd find is the hitch when doing a bolt-on kit. some say they have to trim the square tube at the end of the hitch which isn't a big deal though.

I took my spare tire out from under the truck and put it in the bed when I completed my body lift. Didn't like the looks of it. Then I had dual exhaust put on with the tips coming out the back. Now the spare tire won't fit under the truck again because the pipes are in the way.

Doesn't really matter to me though because I hate the look of the spare tire hanging down after a BL.

Mine's in the bed (IF I carry it) because it won't fit underneath. I've got a dual exhaust and slightly larger tires.

Your lucky to have a spare tire, when I bought my Ranger two years ago from a dealer, it didn't come with a spare tire...and I still haven't really gotten one yet (i have the tire, but no rim)

I'd leave it in the bed. When I got my first flat in my '97 ranger it was on the expressway, and I was pretty happy I was able to just reach into my bed for the spare instead of having to get basically under the truck while on the expressway.
