What does "dumped behind the muffler" mean?
 

This is probably a lame question, but I was just reading one of the ol' "Which muffler/exhaust system should I get?" threads and noticed some people saying they have their systems "dumped behind the muffler". What exactly does this mean? I'm trying to get a visual and am imaging the pipe that comes out from the muffler to be bent downward and not very long. Is this accurate? If so, are they any advantages to having it "dumped" right there over having it come out behind the rear wheel (such as my cat-back)?.

yeah, thats how i have mine, it's just a short turndown right after the muffler. It gives a deeper sound as it reverberates off the ground, not sure what it does performance wise compared to duals out the back, though.

Also, with a muffler that has the exit towards the top, the dump is great because it's out of the way of things. I dented my rear quarterpanel pretty well banging my exhaust pipe up into it offroad. I got a turndown piece at a parts store and put it on and got rid of the rear pipe.

Now, where I get my truck inspected, it's considered acceptable. But some states who have inspection requirements frown on dumps like that. Mine is okay because it's under the bed which is separate from the cab.

Also another problem is the exhaust gases can rise and hit the bottom of your truck. Bad gases can do bad stuff over time.

this shows mine and my buddies exhaust with a turndown after the muffler

you can either dump it by just cutting the pipe off or adding a turndown, mines goes out at an angle, my buddies goes straight down

if you just cut the pipe, it will allow all exhaust gas to build up under the bed and can come up to the cab, i had just a cut pipe for a week, and i noticed a higher exhaust smell then i do with my turndown

I had dumped pipe once on my s15. Most MO inspectors don't know the codes so I had to fight it every year. I finally got a copy of it and carried it with me. I never smelled anymore exhaust than before though.. maybe it was further back. I wonder since my truck is young and unrusted if I ought to slap another muffler on it and do the dumped pipe? Better get plates before mods though.

i thought your supposed to turn it to the side slightly to keep the gases from sitting under the truck at a stand still...

Hmm, thanks for the responses guys. I wonder what the law in California is regarding that. I'm tempted to cut mine and put a turndown piece on it now...

Im in Cali with mine dumped...2 cars ago had another one dumped and it passed inspection
