Lousy, especially without a limited slip or locker. My friend Mike, (sawred on this board -- wait until he sees this...) has proven again, and again, and again, and again....okay sorry, I don't have time for all the agains 
how bad our trucks are in mud. He used to get stuck, and I would get stuck trying to retrieve him.
He's better now, but still not 4x4 capable with a locker and mud terrain tires.
Your BIGGEST liability is your all terrain tires, next is not being 4x4, and finally not having a locker.
You can't fix the 4x4 part affordably, but more aggressive tires and a locker will help.
You can offroad a 4x2 and have a LOT of fun -- just don't do it if getting stuck embarasses you or you WON'T have fun. Me? I wish I didn't get stuck and I'm doing what I can to minimize it, but it's a fact of life for all off roaders, and for 4x2 owners in particular.

around here the mud is under water all the time so it is extremely soft. my mud terrains have dug me in in a few situations where i could have gotten out if i hadnt dug in. do you think getting all terrains would help this out or keep my mudders? my friend has all terrains and cant do wut i can but hes can an older isuzu so his 4wd is really only 2wd and his tires arent exactly new. so would all terrains help me more than mud terrains in soft mud or should i invest in a better treaded mud terrain? any suggestions? thanks.

I just checked out your truck on cardomain. its nice. With my little knowledge, i would think the mud terrains would be better then all terrain cause they have more agressive thread and would grip the wet mud better then the all terrains would. I am looking into getting a locker and a new gear but dont no where to get started. What kind of gear would be best for off road, higher or lower? Right now i have a stock 373 gear unlocked. How hard is it to install a new gear and locker or would you have to get it done prefessionaly? Or is it not worth spending money on that and i should just save up for a 4x4

I have a set of all terrains on my truck. I don't think they're that bad. I don't go looking for it like some of these guys do, but I get though mud okay..

I've got a 2000 XLT 4x2, 3.0 auto, 3.73's and a Powertrax Lock-Right
Evan- If you have the 7.5" rear end, then you've got the same setup I have, minus the locker. I installed the Lock-Right myself and it was fairly easy, the hardest part was grinding about an 1/8th of an inch off of the tip of a tooth on the ring gear, to get enough clearance to pull the pinion shaft out, so I could access the spider gears. A locker will help out a LOT offroad, but you're still not invincible with it. Although if you do get stuck, the locker lets you bury your rear tires evenly down into the mud! lol, i need to get rid of my at's...

rangerrev, if you dont do too much hardcore stuff and set up your rig right then you can keep the 4x2. since it is a true 4x2 then you should be all right. get a taller gear for taller tires and taller gears give you more torque which pretty much means more spinning power to the wheels.
and the best locker to get (in my opinion so dont quote me) is a pneumatic one. i think they are awesome. i dont know how hard they are to install though.

I didn't want the pump. The Auburn ECTED is a totally new design that can function from open, to limited slip (any bias) to lock all based on how much current you dump into the coil. Air lockers are nice, but no better in principle than mechanically or electrically locked ones.
Why people think pneumatic is good can be summed up in one word: ARB
It's not the pneumatic design of the ARB that makes it so great, it's the overall engineered toughness. I see no advantage in using pneumatics to operate the locking mechanism, but I do see the advantage of buying that ARB locker if you are into heavy duty wheeling -- which I am not, lol.

My truck isn't great off road, but it's good enough for now. I thought about lifting it for a while, but it's good at what it was built for - being a general purpose work truck that is efficient. I will always need a vehicle like that, so I am leaving my truck mostly stock and having as much fun as I can off road without breaking anything. When I have the room, time and money, I will buy an inexpensive used 4WD as my off road toy. The only thing I will probably do to my truck to improve off road ability will be a set of Bridgestone Duelers once the GTIIs wear out (which might be a while...I have not rotated them or anything and they are still wearing like steel). Just having better tires will make 90% of the trails around here easy, or at least not very difficult, for my truck. I will worry about the other 10% of trails when I have the money for a dedicated off road beater.

oh well, its the truth. we had an 83 escort with the 1900CC 4 pot and it barely had the power to turn the tires but went like a tank in the snow. same in ur case, ur truck doesnt have the higher power to spin the tires like a 4.ho would. another case, sarahs ranger sucks in the snow because it has to much power. now mine is like urs, underpowered but enough to get myself though the snow good. so calm ur whiney *** down,
