Oil Filter Problem

so today i changed my oil everything was going good until the wrench slipped off the bolt and i smacked myself in the face... but anyways i put my oil filer on just screwed on hand tight then i use the filter socket just to get it snug. after i filled it up with oil when to start the truck and oil started to flow out from the filter. I got back under the truck and tighten it up a little more with the wrench and then try to start the truck again. And again oil came flowing out of the oil filter. SOOOO again i go back under the truck and i didn't crank down the filter as much as possible but i had to use a little more force then i would like. It got the job done and stopped it from leaking but that can't be normal to have to tighten it down that much when they are suppose to just be on there hand tight... anybody else have this problem or even better a solution

Definetally check to see if the old filters gasket isnt still on there. I have had the gasket from the old filter stay on also. It was embarrasing. LOL

You answered your own question.
I've never had anything good come from a fram filter, either air or oil.

Don't use Fram filters either, unless you like your oil just recirculating rather than being filtered after not too long...Or the usual delay in oil pressure they are notorious for. They suck. Spend a couple more dollars and get a decent filter..

And for all the "been using it 1,000 years with no problems." I, and many others have had problems, search Oil Filter comparison and studies...Read up, they're the worst filters out there!

The filter he's using fram or now has nothing to do with it leaking at the seal, everyf filter seals the same way.

Did you put some clean oil on the gasket before installing the new filter? Also was it clean of the old gasket material? And I guess finally make sure you didnt cross thread it.

well i didn't check to see if the seal was stuck up there. I guess il have to wait 3000 miles so i can check it and yes i put oil around the seal. and what would be the best oil filter i can get? i only like the best for my truck.

i havent heard good things about fram, but i never had any issues when i ran them. i run WIX filters now, they are great and reasonably cheap. also, you may not want to wait 3000 miles before you check to see if that seal is on there, it may just leave you stranded on the road with a seized motor..just an FYI

Can't imagine why the filter would need to be retightened several times, and I'd hate to be the one that tries to remove the filter in the future. I'd guess either a double gasket or the new filter just had a bad gasket.

OEM FoMoCo filters FTW!

I'll just say what everyone else said... sounds like the old gasket is still on there.

Also, i wouldnt wait till next oil change to get it off. You might have to buy 5 more quarts to re-fill it, but you should take the filter off and make sure. It might start leaking between now and next oil change if you dont do this.

Yeah just stick with the Motorcraft filters, proven to work great time after time. Just because its more expensive doesn't mean its better. I would go ahead and change that now, you won't lose that much oil just removing the filter, you don't need to change all of it.
