Whoo-hoo! New skid plate being made!

I had to go over to the locomotive shop at work to give one of the mechanics a radio remote I repaired, and I pass through our fab shop on the way. The millwright who runs it was just coming back in as I was heading back out.

He asked me when I was going to be ready to get a plate made and I told him I hadn't done measurements or anything yet. He said to leave the truck with him and he'd do that. So I did.

When I came back I felt like I was buying carpet. He (Jesse) and his assistant (Raymond) came over and Jesse said, "you have your choice of 3 different materials, step over here". They had 3 squares of metal set out, about 1 foot square, like samples at a carpet or drapery store, lol!

They showed me 1/4" carbon steel (my original plan), 1/8" carbon steel, and a very hard variety of 1/8" stainless. They HIGHLY recommended the stainless since it was expensive and they had a scrap piece left from a job they could give me large enough to make my plate. They claim it will actually be stronger than the 1/4" carbon steel and I'm willing to accept their judgement -- particularly since stainless will look so much better.

They'll fab the basic plate then they will take the truck and fit it and give it to me at the end of the day. I don't know what day that will be -- it depends on how busy they are. But it's coming!

I will have it in time for Centralia in August and I WILL POST PICS as soon as it's mounted. Also, they promised me a sketch so I can pass on the design to anyone else who likes it. I'll post that also.

Yee-haw!

Thats awesome John...

How about htrowing in the possible (more business) for a cheaper price bit, im sure, for a quality product, they can make a few bucks off of ya, from members of course...

Just an idea..

Cant wait to see, and for you to hit things with it.

Well, Leo, I talked to them about the idea of fabbing some for sale but they just shrugged. Both of them have some side work going on already, independent of the "government jobs" (as we call work we do for one another at the plant) they do. Not sure if they are interested or not, but if it generates a lot of enhusiasm after it's been seen, I'll print out the responses and show them.

It won't be cheaper for me because I'm not paying anything, lol. I helped Jesse and his wife out of some computer problems several times and he feels he "owes" me, which I never have required, but I'm willing to accept his help, for sure!

That's awesome John wish my fab shop at work would do cool things like that for us... I would be interested in the blueprint for the skid plate.

Yes, but I've seen "Dr. Strangelove" about a thousand times, doesn't that count for something?...

yea...i wanna get rid of the ultra-tuff and powerful plastic radiator protector that is so frickin awesome.lol a blueprint would be helpful. is this skidplate just for the front most part of your truck (like the angled one stretching from about the bumper to the engine) or a double type thing that also runs under your engine?

Oh man I would love a custom skid plate. I'd be interested in the blueprints as well! Not to mention buying one from them if they are interested :)

It's just a front plate -- doesn't extend under the truck. I will probably talk to them about that later in the season. I don't want to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs, so-to-speak.
