Icon5 Why is my truck rare?

I've gotten a few messages about my 2002 FX4 saying this combination of options is rare. Can anyone tell me the story behind some of these features? How can I find out real details like how many may have been produced from the factory like this and why? I love my truck, but I want to tell eveyone how much cool it actually is.

Check my photobucket. Thanks.
Mike

The main reason for it being so "rare" is the fact that it has twin sticks. This was only recently offered as an option in 2002-03, and only came in the FX4 in '02 and FX4 Level 2 in '03...I don't know much about the numbers produced but they are quite hard to find, and you will pay for them when you find them usually.

The fact that you have an '02 Fx4 with dual stick shifts isn't all that rare. The tan interior is. That was only available in '02. So overall your truck is rare.

Twin sticks. Tan Interior w/ tan pebble seats (90%+ of FX4's during those two years were black interior). And that infamous rear J-Style tow hook. Did I mention twin sticks?

It's not that your truck is necessarily rare. Just people like the idea that 02 FX4's are actually LVL II's.

But if you're in the mood to lie. It's because your engine is a specially designed 4.4 liter V7. Very raare.

Here is the response i got from a technical research analyst when i contacted ford.

"2002 Ranger Totals- 251,440/ FX4 Package 6,965

2003 Ranger Totals 41,366/ FX4 Level II Package 517"

And remember, those numbers include automatics and sticks. I would guess the twin stick trucks make up less than half of those numbers. So do the math. That means there were a maximum of 3,741 twin sticks built, and of those 90% or more were black interior. So This guy's tan interior is one of 374 made. Considering in those two years 292,806 rangers were built, i would consider Everything about his truck rare, especially the tan interior.

If anyone wants more infor from Ford, here is the woman that helped me.

It’s an ’02 Fx4 Off-Road, the interior color is usually a dark gray combo or newer ones are black, the Twin Stick is an Off-Raod Option, rare for Rangers but not 02 Off-Road or 03 Lvl II.
I have always seen Red Rangers with Gray interior not the Tan, interesting too.
The main thing is that it is an ’02 Off-Road Package, not many around, very hard to finds parts in the JY to upgrade a std Ranger like my EDGE to what you have OEM.
Very nice truck to hold on too but if you sell make sure you get what it is worth, not the book price but the value in the fact that you can not buy one like that any more and most of the special parts are obsolete.

Luck on your decision,

Umm you kind of failed at the math. 7500 of those rangers(from both years) are twin stick FX4 LVL 2s. There's no automatic LVL2s. And 7000 of those supposedly would have the tan interior.

I'm not following you. In 2002 there were 6965 FX4 OFF ROAD rangers made. That Includes automatics and manual trucks. So split it 50/50. 3482 autos and 3482 manuals. Only the manuals were twin sticks and est. 90% were black interior. In 2003 they made 517 FX4 Levle II's. And yes, they did make automatic Level II's. How do you figure that 7000 are tan interior? I'm pretty much lost as to what you are saying.

Are you sure you have the correct numbers? Hell I think I see more 03 Level II's than I do 02 FX4's.

To the original poster, the twin stick trucks are rare and highly desirable. Then as everyone else has said the FX4's were all black interiors except the 02's where tan was a rare option. The tan FX4 twin stick truck is very rare but to be honest I'd much rather have a black interior one. It does look as though your truck is very clean though.

I guess there's the possibility that those numbers from Ford were only manual trucks, but it is not specified in the response.

Doesn’t rally matter what the number actually were there wasn’t many of them and it is worth more than a regular Ranger, so IF you do trade up for a family vehicle (big mistake and we can’t get into here) then make sure you get the true worth not something the local Used Car Stealership Offers.

Good Luck in the future without one of the best Rangers ever made.

p.s. Shut off the passenger seat air bag, put the kid’s Safety Seat in the front and the wife in back, that works; if she complains, let her walk !

If they really only made about 3-4000 twin stick trucks then I definitely need to hold on to my spare twin stick setup. Maybe I need to find me a 3rd as well.

Don't you understand that in 2002 all FX4s should be manual twin sticks? I don't know if they somehow offered the normal FX4 package as well as the LVL2 package disguised as an FX4.

My point is in 2002 We consider an FX4 to be a LVL 2 therefor they should all be twinstick. That's the whole point of the special package.

Level 2 doesn't mean twin sticks. In the 2002FX4 and 2003 FX4 Level II you could get an automatic. In that case it the truck came with an Electric T-case. So technically its a No-stick truck.

Well why not add the manual T-case and then you can have the best of both worlds.

He never mentioned anything about selling it. Very cool truck indeed very rare in the Ranger world, I doubt you'll ever come across one with the same setup.

I have to say i think the best configuration for the Fx4 L2 would have been the auto tranmission and a manual transfercase. I have a stick now and it is fun to drive but the 5r55e offered twice the towing capacity of the manual and the ability to tune for more HP, Torque, or fuel economy.
