ive seen it on a few threads, but could someone please tell me what dovetailing is and what is its purpose?

 

well in my line of work I cut a "dove tail" shape in the back of denture teeth, which will give it a mechanical bond thus increasing it's strength. It used alot on joints in woodwork and other things too.

It may be used in a completely different meaning/context here though lol

 

Basically, you cut a triangle out of the bed floor of the bed of your truck so you can bring the two sides closer together near the rear of the bed thus creating a smaller bed, which is great for fitting through tight trails off road.
