According to wikipedia: every 98+ is a Gen 4, everything after '00 is a "face-lifted gen 4".

a Gen 4 is 98-00, Gen 5 is 2001+.. some say it's 2001-03 because they did change a lot of electrical items for the 2004 year model, so it'd make 2004+ a gen 6? i dunno..

i liked it back in the '80's to early '90's when ford had a new generation of ranger exactly every 5 years. it made knowing what generation you had simpler. if they continued with that reasoning, heres what the generations would have been:

gen1: 1983-1987
gen2: 1988-1992
gen3: 1993-1997
gen4: 1998-2002
gen5: 2003-2007

now, wouldn't this have been simpler?

One small error. Gen 1 is 1983 to 1988. My 88 still had sealed beam headlights. and If a motor Change is qualifications for new generation, couldn't '86-88 be it's own gen? New that year were the Fuel injected 4 cylinder and new 2.9, as well as new steering columns, dashboards were redisgned slightly, new steering wheel with built in horn pad, and the appearance of an ext. cab. Just food for thought.

I'll post it here too, since I expect everyone else from that forum to ask. The Ranger Station and Ranger Power Sports have tech resources, Ranger-Forums.com does not. If you disagree, see Talk:Ford Ranger and you might work something out.
We need more tech-articles!! I submitted a nice e-fan and removal of the 3.0 stock fan how-to and it was promptly ignored by however is in charge of the how-to's here. Can't remember who at the moment.
