Why no Diesel Ranger in the states?
Q: The Ford Ranger is available in other parts of the world with a diesel engine. What must be considered before this option can be offered in the U.S.?
Got this from Petersen's 4wheel & offroad magazine.

I think Ford just doesn't think it will be profitable here to make the diesel meet us standards. They are probably right though.
It would be good (I think) for all of the companies using rangers for delivery trucks and such, but the 4cyl does the job and lasts forever so I doubt many companies would cough up the extra money for a diesel. And as much as a lot of us would like a diesel ranger, most would rather buy a new F150 than a new Ranger with the cost of a diesel engine tacked on top.
What Ford needs to do is work on the 4.5L diesel for the F150/Expedition. I really wish US manufacturers would start making more passenger cars/suvs with diesel engines like good old VW. The hybrid fad is retarded since the turbo diesel cars are much more fun to drive and normally get the same or better mileage.

They also judge emissions by the size of the vehicle. So yes a F350 with a Powerstroke could pass emissions but a Ranger putting out the same amount of emissions as that F350 would be too much coming from such a small vehicle.

Correct.
Vehicle class by weight is a major reason why they havent put one in a Ranger. I dont see a need for one in the states. Anyone that needs more capability already has gone on to a full size. As was mentioned above, the countries where they sell the diesel Rangers often dont have the full size options that the US does so they have to make due.
If anyone here really wants a diesel compact, buy the Madhindra(sp?). Too bad its gonna be kinda pricey for a company with no US market cred whatsoever.
