Won't start....

So, ummm, yeah.

Went to leave for work this morning, and after cranking it, the truck stumbled to 700-450 RPMS, and then simply died. Now, it will crank all day, but no starting. It is acting like a fuel-delivery problem, but I'm merely guessing. Plenty of juice on the startup, so not a battery.

Maybe the filter? Could it be as easy as that? Or do I have deeper problems?

It's happened once or twice in the last three weeks, but the difference is I was able to apply about 15% throttle and it would "clear its throat" and then run fine once I let off.

Now, I've got NOTHING in the running dept. Not even pressing the pedal....

Ideas guys? I need to fix this ASAP, this is my only vehicle

Thanks!

when you push the valve on the fuel rail does gas come out?
sounds from the way that its "clearing" itself that it could be some junk in the gas. try changing the fuel filter...5 minute fix.

John Moorehead 07-11-2006 05:59 AM

Haven't tried the valve thing...which side of the rail is that on? Never really had to mess with the fuel system before...

Makes sense though

you arent having trouble with the fuel safety shut off switch are you?

maybe its malfunctioning?

when was the last time the filter was changed?

how many miles are on it?

Mark98xlt 07-11-2006 09:12 AM

i had a similar problem but it kept running at the same low rpm, it was the IAC valve

John Moorehead 07-11-2006 09:46 AM

IAC.....refresh me....is that an expensive fix?

You know, that may be it, because doesn't that control the idle speed during normal running? Sometimes my truck will just be sitting, like in a parking lot, idling at almost 1200 RPMs. I know that's not normal. But then, you can drive around, park somewhere else, and it will go back down to 950. My truck has never idled below 950, EVER. Unless something's broken.

IAC idle air control

silver deal by the throttle body. they can be cleaned with some contact cleaner/electricla parts cleaner

For sh!t's and giggles, disconnect the NEG- on the battery for about 5 mins then hook her back up and try starting. I doubt this will work but sometimes resetting like that can clear up some electrical signal problems.

not much is ever that easy, but it's a quick and painless attempt and who knows...

John Moorehead 07-11-2006 02:28 PM

Problem solved.

Changed the IAC, took me about seven minutes, and that included unhooking the neg cable and letting it reset. I always do that any time I mess with anything electrically.

Anyways, it cranked up immediately after that. Truck runs great now!!!!

Thanks guys for your help, you're awesome!!!

A little off topic..

Whatever happened to your Edge front end clip ideas, John?

John Moorehead 07-11-2006 11:52 PM

ZERO!!!! Damn, it's been a minute, eh bro?

The truck progress, concerning mods, has come to an abrupt slowdown as of last November, a result of buying a house. Yet I've still got all the parts lying around.

I have the '01-'03 Edge hood, grille, and header panel. I am torn ass to whether to use them in conjunction with the STX bumper (yet to obtain) and body kit (which I currently have). I almost want to get the ENTIRE '06 front just to make everything line up well....

But in all honesty, I have no clue what I'm aiming to do b/c I've been looking heavily at an '03 Lincoln Aviator....jet black on 20's.....so we'll see.....I've already got an interested person if/when I do sell the truck, but parts are up for grabs unless he wants them with the truck.

But this is all "IF" at this moment. Nothing in concrete. I really need to either finish it or sell it to someone, and give them the drawings and parts so THEY can finish it if they choose. It really would be awesome to see it finished, either way.

Oh man I think this is the first time I guess something engine problem and got it right. My IAC acted up on me like twice but it was like 30 degrees and was raining/starting to snow and it acted up on me once it ran for like 10 mins it was fine and has never acted up on me since. Its weird when the engine is idling that low you dont think its even running and afraid its gunna die.
