Would this chain work?
 

I only go offroading occasionally but with winter coming comes some fun trail riding - with that comes getting stuck.

My old recovery strap has seen the end of it's days and I'm wondering if this 1900LB chain I have will do me any justice, or if I should just buy another strap.

A chain that can handle 1900LB would that be enough to pull out a Ranger?

I would get something stronger. if 1900 is the WLL then it probably wouldnt break, depending how bad it is stuck. if you just do light trail riding it may be just fine, but if it were me i'd just get a new tow strap, they aren't that expensive.

I wouldnt do it.. buy a heavier duty chain, or a new recovery strap.

flying chains are no fun..

I'll just get a new strap - from what I've been reading this chain is too small. Maybe I can sell it :P

I vote strap. Less dangerous. Princess auto has them for cheap. I got mine and a couple d-rings for $50ish.

1900 will break if your recovery vehicle takes any bit of a run . . . ask me how I know. Living and working on a farm, we rarely use chains anymore. A good recovery strap is the only way to go. I carry an 80,000lb one in my truck, and we run a 750,000lb strap for the big tractor. Point being, a strap is far safer and more reliable.

i will never use a chain again. straps are so much safer, lighter, stronger and they can be had pretty cheap. get a good size strap (or two) and a few good size shackles

I found this on the side of the road a few years back, not sure what its for and it's only about 10' long but I keep it in the truck just in case. Nothing better than free and I don't think I could break it very easily...

No chains! Like mentioned above... get a good heavy strap!

Buy a new 30,000 lb/3" Recovery Strap.

Broken chain sucks.

With a snapping chain comes a new tailgate or even a broken rear window. Chains are no fun when they snap

That is a load sling used by rigging crews for lifting.
It is not designed to stretch as a tow strap will and could snap if the slack isn't taken up first.

Thats a sling. DO NOT use it for pulling. only lifting.

I still use chains at work to pull frames. except my chains are certified twice a year. they're kinda tiny in length, but they could pull a car out if you really needed to.

I have a 80klb tow strap. its about 15ft long, does the job for tiny cars.
and then the big dog, a 30ft Nylon braided rope. I got it off a guy who worked for the power company, they use these all the time. its awesome.

I've got both, a 30K strap and about 40' of 3/8" chain.

I have a 15 foot, 3" wide strap that I hook up to my hitch with a clevis. Hasn't let me down yet, and I've yanked a buried Jeep out before by yanking the hell out of it.

Go for the strap! I need to get one myself and I thought I saw some at Harbor Freight the other day also. You can put a chain in as well but if you have both, always go metal to metal, metal (chain) to strap but don't ever do strap to strap! I did that once and they got fused together! A lesson I learned the hard way!

so im guessing you dont have much experience with straps... your supposed to use shackles when connecting straps together and to your truck, it avoids the whole tangled together mess

x2. i have 2 straps one is 30x3 and other is 30x4. worked great when i was getting pulled out. it also pulled out a bronco. front hitch with a shackle/dring was used on my truck and i let the kid pulling me use my rear slide in receiver with shackle.

No, 20+ years ago I was a dumb kid and was trying to get my car pulled out of a ditch. I do know better now but since I don't do any offroading I don't keep up with all of the gear I may need except immediate emergency supplies such as jumper cables, tools, flashlights and such.
