XLT 4x4 vs. XLT 4x4 Off Road???

Hey.

So what exactly are the differences between the XLT 4x4s, and the XLT 4x4 Off Roads???? I am not talking about FX4 Off Road versus Fx4 Level 2. My truck had regular 4x4 decals on it when i got it. I've just always been curious. I'm talking 02 and older i think.

i think the Off Roads had the skid plates on them....

Fx4wannabe01 03-02-2008 02:20 PM

oh yea...mine don't have skids.

Ranger_Guy15 03-02-2008 02:20 PM

Im not sure about this, but I think the off road versions had skid plates underneath for better protection while offroading.

Ahh beat me to it lol.

pehlke1985 03-02-2008 02:45 PM

lol yupp its pretty much the skids lol and in the level II i think they had factory bilsteins maybe not i dunno!!!

Ace 03-02-2008 03:26 PM

yea i dont have a front skid plate on mine... but other spots i do.

TXranger4x4 03-02-2008 03:39 PM

i have a 4x4 off road and i didnt get any skid plates!

redranger4.0 03-02-2008 04:27 PM

my 2000 is a 4x4 offroad and it had all the skids.

stockranger 03-02-2008 04:43 PM

the offroad has a 4:10 limited slip rearend the clutch type .... it also has skidplates the rest of the stuff is a bunch of crap like power windows cruz control etc .....possibly hasbetter shocks but still garbage compared to bilsteins. Possibly increased springs rates too...

what i did was i ordered an xlt 4x4 then added all the stuff I wanted for performance... LS 4:10, skid plates, payload package B for stiffer springs cuz i offroad with ALOT of weight in the bed . If you plan to 4x4 with an empty bed don't get the stiffer springs. this is the most cost effective way if you don't want all the power stuff etc .my trucks performance options are identical to the offroad.. cruz control is the only luxury i needed .if you get a sliding window you get tinted windows along with it so thats als good . go to the ford website and build your truck you can see all this stuff on there .

only fx4 level 2 gets a front skid as far as i know . The offroad gets mid and aft or you can order mid and aft on xlt 4x4 . no front skid available on xlt .

poogster1985 03-02-2008 06:35 PM

some XLT's came with factory 4.10 gears with limited slip clutch type mine did

99ranger4x4 03-02-2008 06:40 PM

the person that sold it to me thought it was the skids and tow hooks.

my tow hooks are a ton beefier than most of the tow hooks i've seen.

i never had the front skid plate.. but if i did it would have been ripped off a while ago.

poogster1985 03-02-2008 06:46 PM

mine would have lasted about ten minutes you see the valance didn't last and i also have the beefy tow hook that are completely closed 3/4 bar bent around and welded to the mount hey 99 i tried what was said on my tread one day and reversed my tire carrier and i mounted my hi-lift jack differently

99ranger4x4 03-02-2008 06:49 PM

got new pics?

who all has that plastic thing under the radiator? i ripped that off, somehow i didnt get the radiator

poogster1985 03-02-2008 06:50 PM

mine was there and then one day after wheelin it was gone so i figured i didnt need it give me a minute on pic

99ranger4x4 03-02-2008 06:51 PM

i was looking under there one day a few weeks after i got the truck.. noticed a few bolts holding on plastic pieces... looked at another ranger a few weeks later and realized i didn't have what they did heh

RageRanger 03-02-2008 06:54 PM

my 98 4x4 or had rear skid plates but dident have the front.... It also looked like it had some sort of Rancho shock... had a rubber boot on the shock vs a metal sleeve... And a LSD rear

poogster1985 03-02-2008 07:00 PM

it still swings out didnt change a thing other than placing the mounting bracket on the opposite sides

99ranger4x4 03-02-2008 07:08 PM

10x better imo

how do you like it?

poogster1985 03-02-2008 07:10 PM

about the same but i can get to the tire alot easier now and the jack is not sticking way out to get caught on anything or someone walk into it not paying attention like i did

99ranger4x4 03-02-2008 07:24 PM

ha

i just think it goes better that way.

k.blakeley 03-02-2008 07:25 PM

The only skids mine came with are on the t-bar housing.

poogster1985 03-02-2008 07:26 PM

thats all mine had now that you said that

99ranger4x4 03-02-2008 07:37 PM

are they actually skids? or just part of the tbar structure?

schatten789 03-02-2008 07:45 PM

well mine is a sport 4x4 and it came with everything you guys have said.
limited slip 4.10 gears, all skids except the front, big beefy front tow hooks, and the plastic peace under the radiator( which I now have huge washers and tire wraps holding up).

leadfoot 03-02-2008 07:45 PM

I have a 98 offroad and the only skid plates mine has is on the t-bar housing and under the gas tank. My truck only has a 3.73 rearend and no ls to the best of my knowlage. The shocks were upgraded on the offroad editions. BTW what is the plastic thing on the bottom of the radiator for?
