I bought it the other night and i should get it tomarrow...I never seen this gauge cluster installed in a ranger, so yall think it will work? It has a digital odo...

can the dealer program the right milage?

sry for the ****ty title

Strider0O0 06-08-2005 07:51 PM

yeah the dealer should be able to adjust the mileage

TippnOver 06-08-2005 08:00 PM

thas sweet, but looks like its for a 5 speed??

V8 Level II 06-08-2005 08:27 PM

No, it won't work. You need the earlier ST cluster with the mechanical odo. Also, if you get the earlier type, be sure the drive of the donor ST matches your truck (4x4 or 4x2).

To get a digital odometer reset, the dealer has to send it to a Ford-approved service center. The dealer service tools cannot alter odometers - for obvious reasons.

ScottG 06-08-2005 08:36 PM

from what the guys at the dealership told me, they cant tuch odos that customers bring in, they order a new odo from FORD with the correct milege already on them and install those only

but they are both electronic

...and totally different. Completely different internals, different plug connectors, different communication with the PCM.

The newer ST cluster has a microprocessor built in that takes over the GEM functions and controls the individual gauges/displays in the cluster based on sensor inputs.

The earlier ST cluster is a close cousin to a 96~03 Ranger cluster with an electric motor operating the odometer, individual gauges driven directly by sensors, etc.

Would it still work if you bought an auto cluster for a manual?

V8 Level II 06-09-2005 11:13 AM

And one more thing.... The eBay seller listed that digital odometer cluster as 2002~2003. I'm sure that the 2002 cluster had the mechanical odo and I believe the 2003 did as well. So, is the picture wrong or is the description wrong?

vp6799 06-09-2005 12:49 PM

The description is wrong from the picture. It's totally off, not even close.

This is a cluster from 2001-2003 sport track: CLICK ME FOR ST CLUSTER

2004 and up clusters are controlled digitally, 2001-2003 clusters are controled almost the same, but it has motors that move the odometer.
The 04 up clusters also use different plugs to connect the cluster than the 01-03 st's use.

ranger024x4 06-09-2005 01:20 PM

damn... i got owned by ebay lol

How much did you pay for it? Wait until you recieve it, and then try to contact the seller and notify them about the mistake. Also tell them that it won't work on a 2001-2003 ST, only a 2004 and up ST.

ranger024x4 06-09-2005 06:44 PM

25+shippin... so 40 total

Screw it, throw it back on ebay and make some money off it. You should be able to get $50 plus shipping easily.

pacodiablo 06-09-2005 06:54 PM

2004 and up Rangers have digital odometers, so I guess that means they don't work in '03 and older trucks either?

I wanted to get an '04 or '05 gauge cluster for my truck, but I guess that won't be happening.

ranger024x4 06-09-2005 06:55 PM

will they work in the 04+ rangers?

vp6799 06-09-2005 07:18 PM

I suppose that they would if it has the digital odo.

A 2004+ Ranger cluster will not work in a 2003-back Ranger.

The 04+ Ranger and 04+ Sport Trac clusters are not interchangeable. Different connectors, different number of pins, different pin positions, different number of gauges, etc.

Sonic_03 06-09-2005 08:55 PM

well is tehre any nice clusters from explorers or anything that will fit and be different short of taking out the cluster and paint it ??

You should have a nice silver cluster already. If you can find a Tremor or an early Sport Trac, they should work. Also possible to do a quality overlay. These guys offer EL overlays w/lots of background options, even custom stuff:

www.speedhut.com

Their listings only go to 2002 for Ranger but have been used successfully on 03 as well.

nwranger 06-23-2005 09:39 AM

Hey, vp6799. That cluster you linked to on ebay is the one I just won. $58. Just waiting to get it and put it in my 96. In WA state at 10 years/100k they dont care about the milage. I'm almost at 118K now. Not sure if I will adjust the OD to match mine.
