Its been a while since Ive been on here but I'm looking for some advise from you guys on the maintenance on my truck. I have a 2006 3.0 L V6 Ranger and I took it into the Ford dealer for an oil change today and walked out with a bill for $562.07. I have 28,130 miles on my truck so right when I got there this morning they asked if I wanted to do my scheduled service for 30,000 miles since I was there. I declined and said I just wanted the oil changed and tires rotated. Now a little history, Ive had this truck for going on 3 years and I barely put 10,000 miles on it a year. I havent been the best with keeping it up with its scheduled maintenance other than changing the oil and rotating the tires ever 3,500-3,700 miles. They gave me this print out for scheduled maintenance and first off I was wondering if this seems reasonable for you guys.

While they were doing their Multi-Point inspection they found I only had 2mm left on my front two brake pads and 4mm on both drums. So they recommended to change my front brake pads and rotors. Also they changed my fuel and air filter. They gave me the option of having my tires balanced and aligned which I declined since I have the Contratrac tires and I only plan on keeping them for about another year or so until I get new ones and I couldnt justify $150.00 to have the balance and alignment done. My second question is do you guys think I made the right choice of what work to have done? Now that I think about it I basically said yes for them to do everything that they offered.
Over the summer I plan on getting my rear drums replaced and Ill probably get new tires when I get to 40,000, if not before, since i still have 7/32 of tread on them.
My final question is is this normal to pay this much for maintenance at 30,000 miles? It seems odd to me that so far I have paid $562.07 for front pads and misc parts after only 3 years of use because that equals out to about $.50 a day. Not too mention that of that $581.64 they have listed for the 30,000 mile tune up that I just only paid for the fuel filter and rotation so the remainder of that plus what I paid today makes the grand total $1,064.71 for 3 years of use which then equals out to about a dollar a day, and that isnt including the wear Ive done to my tires, rear drums, shocks, etc. I mean its not like I drive my truck hard, I basically drive 8 miles a day round trip to school or work.

What exactly did they do? Your post is not clear at all. Did they brake down individual costs?
New front pads/rotors, oil + filter, air filter, fuel filter, rotation, transmission flush, coolant flush?

 

oil, and filter is easy, Fuel filter isn't that hard either, the air filter is the easiest thing to change next to wiper blades. PS fluid is easy if you have a decent suction pump.

I guess this summer its some How-To time. Gotta put that Nikon of mine to use.

 

Note to self...stay away from the dealers.

 

if you do not drive very often
your rotors can rust pretty badly ,, the brake pads can remove a-lot of rust from the rotor
that it-self can greatly reduce your rotor thickness very quickly

changing air-filter/spark plugs / oil filter / engine oil / spark plug wires can easily be done yourself
it is not hard at all

4wd brake rotors and brake pads can be replaced yourself too

 

They replaced my front two pads and machine rotors, packed my wheels bearings, replaced the left caliper pins, replaced the fuel filter, air filter, changed my oil and changed my oil filter. Total parts=199.92 and total labor=324.45. They didnt do a tranny fluch or a coolant flush, I opted to do those another time.
And its not that I dont drive very often, I drive my truck every day so its not that my pads are sitting and collecting rust on them.
I guess Im still wondering if that all sounds normal for parts to be fixed/replaced at 30,000 miles??

Yea I plan on never going there again. Only reason I did was because of the cold weather and Im not a fan of changing oil and the filter myself while there is snow on the ground.

that sucks dude...brakes you could have had done for $100 and alignment woulda been about $40 if you had gone to a smaller shop...People say to stay away from them, but considering your experience with the dealership...I would have opted to go to the maw and paw shop and just watched them as they worked on it. Oil change would have been like $25 too and I dont know about fuel filter...You can get your tires balanced at walmart for $2-$5 and I bet rotation wouldnt be much more if any.

30,000 miles seems about right for front brakes, unless you go easy on them...but Id assume you dont think about your brake's life everytime you go for the pedal.

 

If all you asked for is an oil change, and they did all that other work without calling you, I'd tell them to shove it. If they did call you to approve the other repairs and you accepted, then I guess your SOL.

 

i think you got taken. i've been to the dealer and had oil changes and i've never paid more then $45-$50. they replaced the air filter in the late fall/early summer and have rotated my tires once or twice now with no extra charges.
find another dealership or take it to a mechanic whose a little more reasonable. brakes, i've got 38,000 kms (dunno off hand how many miles that is. i wanna say between 15k and 20k) the only brake service i've had done was the machining of my front rotors since they were starting warp and i could feel it.
as far as time in between visits, i aim for 6k clicks. my last one was 36k and i'll bring it in at 42 then an even 50. the service guy i delt with said i would be fine getting 6-7k outta my oil changes.

 

Im definately not going back to the dealer for any more work. There is a smaller mechanic shop that Ive been too before which I'm going to use from now on. Looks like next up in the summer is going to be to have my tranny fluid flushed and new brake drums on the back.
