You wanna see a REAL air intake silencer?!
Here's the one I took off my FXT today...
The Ranger just had a little tiny silencer. Goes from the intake, into the fender, then curves around back into the engine compartment in a different place. It was b*tch to remove...2 feet long. |

Are you sure that's a silencer? It looks more like ducting to me. What part of it acts as the silencer? (usually a conical object or mesh screen)

hmm sometimes its good to have a lil pressure in their, instead of alot of air coming in...but I'm prolly wrong..

It did make a large sound difference. Makes the exhaust/engine sound meaner, and I can actually hear the turbo spool up and hear the blowoff valve now, which makes it seem more powerful.

Cody, there is need to keep the velocity up and not get reversion in the intake, but it usually refers to the "intake runners". This is why the variable length intake runner systems have been set up. It's not a matter of needing resistance so much as a certain volume and velocity based on intake volume requirements and the rate of pulsing of the intake based on RPM. Intake systems, to a certain extent, resemble exhaust systems in the sense of having an optimum volume and velocity to ensure smooth air delivery to the cylinders at different RPM's. |
Just take the airbox off and get a K&N or a MAC cone filter. It sounds awesome!!!

From the research i've been doing I have found that if I were to add a CAI like k&n and the like, at this point to my otherwise stock engine, it would actually harm performance. Now down the road when i upgrade the turbo and intercooler and things, then it will help. But for now this is the best thing I can do.

buddy, thats nothin. new focuses have the airbox down in front of the driver wheel well. it goes into the fender, up over the front wheel, and about to where the door starts. 3-4 feet easy.

My caddy has something like that n it except I cant take it out because the ducting for the intake goes around the engine management control box. The thing is covered with heatsinks, so if I were to get rid of the ducting it might not cool properly and the last thing I need is a burned out EMC. :dunce: So I just cut a big hole in the bottom of the stock airbox and got the same effect, but it will still pull air through the ducting to cool the emc. :biggthump:
