02 Ranger Edge intermittent stall
 

Have the 3.0 w/5spd manual. Great truck except for this problem that has the dealer baffled. Truck only has 17K miles, and spends most of its time in the garage. Truck is all stock. On a warm day a couple of months ago it stalled at a light.......cranked it about ten times....would not start. Thought I had tripped the computer or the key was bad. Came back about 30 minutes later and the thing started up and ran perfectly for the next couple of months. Warm day again, drove to motorcycle shop. Truck was running perfectly. Came back out and it would crank, but not start. Got out the code reader........no codes came up. Checked the inertia fuel shut off, it was good. Hauled it to the dealer. Mech came in the next morning and the truck started and ran perfectly with no codes. They let it get hot running in the shop, but could not stall it. It's not missing or backfiring at all when it runs. Sounds like a fuel pump? or ? anybody else have a similiar problem out there............

My Blazer did the same thing when the fuel pump went...twice, the dealer laughed at me too. It didnt show any codes but it was the fuel pump. I ended up taking it to a "high class" dealership and they told me half of the engine parts needed to be replaced to uphold the warranty for the pump(thanks to chevy engineering). Yeah it sucked... for them! I had already traded it for my Edge! LOL! I wouldnt think a 17k would be going already though? Ask a tech first before getting it changed, and make sure someone who knows what theyre doing(big dealership) works on it if it is, because if it was like mine other parts need replaced with the pump, or it just goes bad again.

Sell the "pos" truck, and buy a 4.0L!!!!

i read something where in the pass. footwell there is a fuel cutoff or something..try that. My friend has a problem very similar to yours...except he located it. The passenger was kicking the kick panel and making two wires hit, it was in turn killing his engine and rendering it useless until the computer had a chance to "catch-up" (as the dealer put it)

I would take a look at that...if that doesn't work do what I did, mine was doing something similar...it was the stupides thing of me. When you disconnect your battery cables for 10-15 mins your computer resets. it has to learn your idle, shift points, etc. and you HAVE to run your a/c, headlights, etc, you have to put your truck at full current pull or else it will idle low. I couldn't figure it out, then one day, I was finishing up installing an amp or two and I figured it out. I had to idle with my headlights on and my a/c on at least half way for it to idle properly. I don't know why...maybe it's just me

Just read some threads on that crank position sensor........sounds like that is a possibility.......may give a new one a try..........thanks for all the replies so far.....

something similar to this happened to my truck...the mechanic found out what was the deal on accident... the ground was loose. might wanna look into that. Dont ask me where it is cause i dont know. i havent seen my truck since its been repaired (long story - to be posted later). So theres something else to look into.

ya kno.,. i dunno bout your 02, but on my mazda I had this problem, your truck may be similar, or have a similar set up. my car went thru 9 distibutors, what would happen is over time, the coil packs would break down and lose the connection, stalling the vehical, and then, it wouldnt restart till it completely cooled off. at first, its like ur saying, it runs fin for awhile after the first stall, but then stalls again. I would have your dealer, or u, change out your coil packs. that could possibly be the culprit right there. the thing to remember tho, unless the truck jumps out and grabs the tech by the neck, the dealer will never know what wrong. all the "true" mechanics, or i sohuld say 90% of them are a thing of the past. unless your dealership and plug it in, and say AHA! there it is! thats the problem - they have no clue.

ECM can do it too. Same thing was happening on my s-10 and it was the engine controll module. bob
